Kyiv hit by explosions following Russian missile threat

Strong explosions shook Kyiv early on Wednesday morning after an air raid alert was activated across the Ukrainian capital due to the threat of a Russian ballistic missile strike, according to a journalist from Agence France-Presse.

The sirens sounded in the early hours as air defense warnings alerted residents across the city to an incoming threat. Ballistic missiles follow high-altitude flight trajectories before plunging toward targets at extreme speeds, making early warnings critical for civilian safety and urban air defense units.

In a national address delivered on Tuesday evening, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of the risk of a massive Russian attack targeting the capital. Kyiv has been subjected to daily air strikes in recent weeks as conflict across the country continues.

Kyiv is the capital and primary administrative hub of Ukraine, situated along the Dnieper River in the north-central part of the country. Volodymyr Zelensky has served as the president of Ukraine since 2019, leading the government throughout the ongoing war. Agence France-Presse is an international news reporting agency headquartered in Paris, France.

Infrastructure strikes and power restrictions

Ukrainian authorities have accused Russian armed forces of systematically trying to destroy the country's national infrastructure. Officials stated that Moscow is targeting vital infrastructure because its military forces are unable to advance on the front lines, five years after the outbreak of the war ordered by the Kremlin.

Russian air strikes recently targeted two of the main bridges in Kyiv, which connect eastern and western districts across the Dnieper River. On Tuesday, Ukrainian power grid operator DTEK announced restrictions on electricity supply following strikes on energy facilities as winter approaches.

DTEK is Ukraine's largest private energy distribution company, operating key parts of the national power network. Maintaining electrical stability is critical during Ukrainian winters, when sub-zero temperatures create heavy demand for indoor heating and energy infrastructure faces high seasonal strain.
