Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori said her government will evaluate a request for presidential pardon submitted by former President Alejandro Toledo.
Speaking from Piura, Fujimori said the request would be assessed through two kinds of analysis, one technical and medical, and the other humanitarian. She added that the Commission on Pardons and Presidential Clemency must first be formed before the review can begin.
Toledo's health and sentence
Toledo is serving a sentence of more than 20 years and 6 months at the Barbadillo prison over the 'Interoceanica Sur' case. He has said his health is critical and that he no longer has time to lose.
In a recent interview, Toledo said he has cancer and serious heart problems. He said that if Fujimori approves his request, he would continue treatment at a clinic.
Toledo said he was asking Fujimori, who he noted had sent him a message when his father died, to speed up the process on his request for presidential clemency, because he did not want to die in prison.
Death of his mother-in-law
Toledo also spoke about the recent death of his mother-in-law, Eva Fernenbug, in Brussels. He said that neither he nor his wife, Eliane Karp, had been able to handle the burial because of his legal situation.
Toledo said they wanted to cremate her but that he and his wife did not want that, adding that he wanted to go visit her.
