Jennifer Ayache reveals childhood surgery for sixth toe

Jennifer Ayache, the lead singer of French pop-rock band Superbus, has revealed that she was born with a sixth toe and underwent corrective surgery when she was seven years old.

The 42-year-old musician opened up about her lifelong physical insecurity during an appearance on the podcast En apparence, hosted by comedian Nora Hamzawi. Ayache explained that she had kept the detail secret for decades and had never spoken about it publicly before, jokingly presenting the admission to Hamzawi as a major world exclusive.

Ayache, the daughter of French actress and comedian Chantal Lauby, hesitated initially before deciding to share the story. She noted that while being born with six toes was not dangerous, she found it bizarre to live with. Her childhood procedure to remove the extra digit left traumatic memories, with the singer calling the operation the worst pain of her life.

Living with an unusual foot

The surgery left her foot looking unusual, which Ayache admitted remains a source of self-consciousness. Even so, she maintained a humorous perspective on the situation during the recording. She remarked that in India, people with six fingers or six toes are reputedly regarded as chosen by God, suggesting that the belief made the anomaly sound somewhat cool, though she laughed that it still left her with an unattractive foot.

Understanding hexadactyly and polydactyly

The condition Ayache described is known medically as hexadactyly, a congenital trait marked by the presence of six fingers on a hand or six toes on a foot. Hexadactyly is the most frequent form of polydactyly, the general medical term for supernumerary digits. The malformation is relatively rare, occurring in approximately 1.7 cases per 1,000 live births.

Ayache is widely recognized across France as the founder, lead vocalist, and primary songwriter for Superbus, a group she formed in the late 1990s. The band became one of the most prominent French pop-rock acts of the 2000s, producing widespread radio hits including Butterfly and Lola. Her mother, Chantal Lauby, is also a household name in French entertainment, having risen to fame with the comedy troupe Les Nuls before starring in major French films.

The revelation was prompted by the theme of Hamzawi's interview show, which invites notable figures to speak honestly about body image, beauty expectations, and personal complexes. Although Ayache admitted that her foot continues to make her feel self-conscious, she showed that she is now comfortable reflecting on the childhood experience with humor and openness.
