Actress Jamie Lee Curtis discussed her 42-year marriage to Christopher Guest during a presentation for the new NBC series Newlyweds. The 67-year-old actor explained that her own relationship served as inspiration for the project.

Curtis said that she and Guest had never spent more than 72 consecutive hours together before getting married. She joked that there was little conversation before their wedding and described them as strangers when they married.
She added with humor that a person wakes up one day and realizes their partner does not talk much. She noted that they survived those early moments and have now remained together for 42 years.
Courtship and wedding timeline
Curtis previously recounted seeing a photo of Guest in an issue of Rolling Stone magazine and deciding that she would marry him. The couple went on their first date in July 1984 and fell in love by August of that year.
Guest proposed to Curtis in September 1984. They married on December 18, 1984, just six months after their first date took place.
Overcoming differences
Curtis explained that as time passed, the two began learning more about each other and realized they wanted to continue building a life together. She stated that they are complete opposites who discussed what can happen when people in their 60s meet and decide to commit.
Despite facing difficulties throughout their marriage, the couple has stayed together. Curtis previously described their relationship as a difficult but successful marriage, and in 2024 she said the secret to a long relationship is simply that you do not leave.
