HBO has concluded the third season of fantasy series House of the Dragon as main character Rhaenyra Targaryen captures the capital city of King's Landing.
The American action drama series was created by showrunner Ryan Condal and is based on books by George R.R. Martin. The show launched on HBO in summer 2022 and returned for its third season in summer 2026. Starring Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Emma D'Arcy, and Rhys Ifans, the series contains 18 episodes across its first two seasons with one-hour episode lengths and holds ratings of 8.1 on Kinopoisk and 8.3 on IMDb.
The third season begins after the Battle of the Gullet, where Rhaenyra Targaryen, played by Emma D'Arcy, loses her son and direct heir Jacaerys, played by Harry Collett. In response, Rhaenyra launches a military move against King's Landing while primary enemy forces are away, taking the capital without resistance to claim the Iron Throne.
Although the faction known as the Blacks scatters enemy forces and captures Dowager Queen Alicent, played by Olivia Cooke, the fleeing Hightower family known as the Greens empties the treasury before surrendering. The lost treasury leaves Rhaenyra without funds to pay city guards, sparking urban riots while the High Septa delays official recognition of her new rule.
Lord Ormund Hightower, played by James Norton, gathers forces for a counterstrike and claims the throne for Alicent's youngest son Daeron, played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. Ormund's brother Gwayne, played by Freddie Fox, doubts victory because the Blacks control elite Northern troops and dragon riders recruited from Targaryen bastards.
Production Delays and Battle Action
The third season increases action scale compared to earlier installments, featuring major battles at both the start and end of the season. Showrunners moved the Battle of the Gullet into the third season after Hollywood strikes and budget cuts prevented a large finale for season two.
Military actions in the new episodes contain tactical errors by key leaders. During the assault on the capital, Rhaenyra's husband and advisor Daemon, played by Matt Smith, leaves his dragon to fight on foot, allowing an enemy dragon to arrive unnoticed.
While the land and sea battles deliver heavy action, palace politics between combat scenes rely on basic character motives centered on personal ambition and bloodlines. Betrayals remain predictable, and calculating leaders like Daemon and Ormund fail to demonstrate strategic genius.
Comparison with Game of Thrones
The prequel series differs from the original Game of Thrones show created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The original series subverted traditional fantasy tropes from The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, and The Lord of the Rings by combining magic with postmodern cynicism, violence, and sex.
The new season of House of the Dragon relies on visual spectacle and familiar themes like incest rather than adding new narrative elements. The approach contrasts with the spin-off series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which covered a smaller storyline on the edge of the universe with a lighter tone.
