Automotive editor Mikhail Markov completed a comprehensive test drive of the Haval H7 crossover in Russia, evaluating its off-road capabilities and daily technology features. The vehicle is produced at the Great Wall Motor automated manufacturing plant located in Tula, Russia.

Markov, who owns a 2007 Mazda MX-5, evaluated the crossover in its Techno Plus trim level across various driving conditions. Initial testing took place at an off-road proving ground in Leningrad Oblast during late April, where conditions included snow, wet clay, and steep descents, followed by evaluations during severe winter snowstorms and routine daily driving for work and errands.



Infotainment screen and integrated Yandex digital services

The interior of the Haval H7 features a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display operating on fast firmware. The system is deeply integrated with digital services from Russian technology companies Yandex and VK, allowing drivers to access native applications directly without connecting a smartphone.

Although the crossover supports both wireless and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Markov observed that built-in applications offered greater convenience. He reported that wireless smartphone synchronization rapidly drained his mobile device battery during travel.



The integrated Yandex Navigator application enables drivers to sign into their personal accounts, automatically synchronizing saved addresses such as home, work, and country cottages across devices. Searching for a location on a mobile phone saves the destination to search history, allowing it to be selected on the vehicle touchscreen.



The infotainment platform also features Yandex Music, accessible directly from the desktop icon without connecting a phone. The application provides access to personal recommendations, curated playlists, and favorite tracks, requiring an active Yandex subscription to operate.



Additionally, the system incorporates the Yandex Books application for audiobooks, though Markov noted he preferred background music while driving to maintain focus on the road.



Offline voice commands and Alice smart speaker controls

The Haval H7 infotainment system supports extensive voice control functionality, covering approximately 150 functions and 800 individual commands. Drivers can adjust climate control settings using natural phrases, such as requesting to make the cabin warmer or setting a target temperature to 22 degrees Celsius.

Voice commands also operate cabin ventilation modes, window functions, the sunroof, seat heating, seat ventilation, and interior ambient lighting. Drivers can also control radio selection, audio volume, track changes, and navigation routing to nearby cafes, cinemas, or home addresses.



The vehicle supports remote voice interaction through Yandex Station smart speakers powered by the Alice voice assistant. From home, owners can ask Alice to start the engine, activate seat heating, verify door lock status, or check remaining fuel range.



The voice recognition system distinguishes between speech from the driver and the front passenger, maintaining accuracy in noisy environments with open windows. Core controls, including climate settings and window operations, function offline without an internet connection, permitting use in remote regions such as the dense forests of Karelia. Internet connectivity is only required for streaming music and live navigation maps.

Turbocharged powertrain and all-wheel drive off-road specs

Under the hood, the Haval H7 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a dual-clutch robotic transmission. The powertrain generates 231 horsepower and 380 Nm of torque delivered through a permanent all-wheel drive system.

The crossover provides nine driving modes for varied road conditions, including specific settings for grass, mud, and sand. Chassis specifications include a ground clearance of 200 mm, an approach angle of 24 degrees, and a departure angle of 30 degrees.

In off-road testing, the vehicle navigated deep snow, loose sand, and wet dirt roads after rain. The vehicle features a dedicated off-road menu and instrument cluster display, as well as a rear differential lock that enabled the crossover to ascend steep hills covered in wet mud and clay.

Remote telematics control through the GWM mobile application

The Haval H7 includes an integrated telematics module that pairs with the GWM mobile application, available on Android and iOS platforms. The app permits owners to remotely check remaining fuel range, battery charge levels, tire air pressure, tire temperatures, and total mileage.

Using the application, drivers can remotely start the engine to warm the vehicle in winter or cool the cabin in summer prior to entry. The app also allows remote activation of seat heating, seat ventilation, and climate control, alongside vehicle location tracking in large open parking lots.

Winter equipment package and interior climate controls

Both trim levels of the Haval H7 offered in the Russian market feature a winter package designed for cold environments. Standard equipment includes a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, full windshield heating, and heated windshield washer nozzles.

The Haval H7 extends heating to the rear seating area, warming both the rear seat cushions and backrests. The interior maintains physical control buttons, dual-zone climate control, and dual air deflectors capable of directing separate airflow streams toward the feet and face.

For warm weather, active seat ventilation is provided for both driver and front passenger seats. Markov concluded that the Haval H7 offers a balanced vehicle for urban driving and long-distance travel. Commercial distribution in the region is managed by Great Wall Motor Russia.
