Conductor Gustavo Dudamel will lead the National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela at the Auditorio de Barcelona on November 3 after two earlier postponements.

Gustavo Dudamel returns to Barcelona with youth orchestra

Gustavo Dudamel will return to the Auditorio de Barcelona on November 3 to conduct the National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela in Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony.

The concert was originally scheduled for December last year, but organisers had to reschedule the performance on two occasions. The visit was delayed first by air travel restrictions affecting Venezuela and subsequently by earthquakes.

Dudamel's return to the Catalan capital comes three weeks after he opened the 2026-2027 season of BCN Classics. On that occasion, the conductor led the New York Philharmonic on its first international tour, performing in Barcelona alongside the Orfeó Català choir.

El Sistema anniversary tour

Organisers of the Barcelona concert series BCN Classics announced on Monday that the concert forms part of the tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of El Sistema. The Venezuelan social and cultural programme was founded by José Antonio Abreu in 1975.

The National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela is considered one of the flagship ensembles of El Sistema, where Dudamel also trained as a young musician. Organisers describe the orchestra as a benchmark of artistic excellence achieved through the South American country's educational model.

Founded five decades ago, El Sistema provides free musical instruments and tuition to hundreds of thousands of children across Venezuela. The state-funded initiative uses immersive orchestral practice and choral singing to promote social inclusion and community development, inspiring similar youth programmes across the world.

Dudamel, who was born in Barquisimeto, started playing the violin as a child in El Sistema before studying conducting under Abreu. He gained global recognition leading the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra and directed the Los Angeles Philharmonic before becoming the first Latino to assume the musical direction of the New York Philharmonic.

Shostakovich Leningrad Symphony

The upcoming performance in Barcelona will be dedicated entirely to Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7, known as the Leningrad Symphony. Organisers of BCN Classics said on Monday that the composition is one of the most impactful works in the 20th-century symphonic repertoire.

Shostakovich composed the monumental work during the Second World War while Nazi troops laid siege to the city of Leningrad. Written during the brutal blockade, the piece reflected the suffering and resilience of the trapped population and became a symbol of resistance and hope in the face of wartime devastation.

The four-movement symphony is renowned for its immense scale and demanding orchestration, requiring expanded brass and percussion sections. Its famous opening movement features an insistent martial theme that grows in volume and intensity, depicting the approach of conflict before resolving into an expression of collective grief.

Concert at Auditorio de Barcelona

The concert will take place at the Auditorio de Barcelona, the city's premier modern concert hall designed by architect Rafael Moneo. The venue serves as the regular home for major symphonic events in Catalonia and frequently welcomes international orchestras participating in the BCN Classics concert series.

The November 3 concert allows the Venezuelan musicians to complete their long-delayed appearance in Spain as their anniversary tour moves forward. Audiences in Barcelona will hear the flagship ensemble tackle one of classical music's most dramatic war symphonies under the baton of their country's most celebrated conductor.
