Greek Alternate Health Minister Eirini Agapidaki has rejected political accusations of promoting a woke agenda following a software error on the national healthcare platform.
The controversy emerged after an unspecified gender option appeared on an online application form for high-cost medications managed by the National Organisation for the Provision of Health Services, known as EOPYY. Former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and political figure Kyriakos Velopoulos had accused the ruling New Democracy government of advancing a woke agenda through the digital health portal.
In a social media statement aimed at steering debate toward substantive policy, Agapidaki said the appearance of the field was purely a technical error by an external contractor. Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis subsequently ordered the contractor to remove the internal data categories from the public user form.
Software error behind platform dropdown
Agapidaki explained that the software standard in question is an international quality standard used strictly for back-end data processing rather than gender identity policy. The system codes non-numerical variables so software packages such as SPSS can analyze statistical data.
Under the ISO coding system, numerical values are assigned to gender data fields. The value zero represents unknown data where a user leaves a field blank, value one represents male, value two represents female, and value three denotes not applicable or indefinite for entities where gender does not apply.
Statistical coding standards explained
Agapidaki noted that statistics relies on nominal, categorical, and quantitative variables. Gender acts as a nominal variable requiring numerical coding to be processed alongside categorical variables such as educational level.
For educational attainment, value one indicates compulsory education graduates, value two represents high school graduates, and value three covers university graduates. She emphasized that these numbers function solely as system codes without any hierarchical ranking. Meanwhile, quantitative variables like age require no numerical coding and are entered directly into the software system.
According to Agapidaki, researchers previously entered these numerical codes manually when compiling paper questionnaires. Modern automated software now handles the data conversion automatically within the EOPYY system. The contractor mistakenly made those internal software processing categories visible on the patient application form.
Healthcare delivery and social justice claims
Agapidaki rejected the political criticism, stating that the only ideological dimension of the government's healthcare policy is its commitment to patient care. She highlighted New Democracy's initiative allowing high-cost prescription drugs to be delivered directly to patients' homes, eliminating long wait times in queues.
She described home delivery of critical medications as a matter of social justice achieved under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. EOPYY operates under the Greek Ministry of Health to manage public healthcare coverage and pharmaceutical benefits across the country.
