Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis has rejected claims that organ transplants are at risk in Greece, confirming no donated grafts have been lost due to blood shortages.

Georgiadis shared an official statement from the Hellenic Transplant Organization on social media platform X in response to a television news report broadcast on Thursday, August 20. The broadcast had claimed that solid organ surgeries faced potential cancellation across the country because of a lack of blood units.
In its statement aimed at reassuring prospective recipients, the Hellenic Transplant Organization clarified that no organ transplant has ever failed to take place due to an absence of blood. The agency affirmed that every possible effort is consistently made to ensure that all organ grafts from domestic donors are successfully transplanted into patients in Greece.
Emergency Medical Priorities
The Hellenic Transplant Organization emphasized that organ transplantation is classified as an urgent medical act under national healthcare guidelines and is systematically covered on a priority basis. It highlighted that cooperation with the National Blood Donation Center and blood donation departments across Greek hospitals has been and continues to be effective.
The state agency oversees organ donation and surgical transplantation across Greece, coordinating between donor hospitals, surgical teams, and patient waiting lists. Solid organ transplants involve critical procedures such as kidney, liver, heart, and lung surgeries, which depend heavily on immediate blood transfusion availability during surgical procedures.
Summer Donation Challenges
The organization acknowledged that lower blood supply during the summer months creates operational difficulties for all medical procedures. It noted that blood donation departments and the National Blood Donation Center maintain intensive efforts to address seasonal supply dips.
Both organ donation and blood donation arise from personal altruism and the shared desire to assist fellow human beings, according to the official statement. The organization stressed that efforts to preserve and encourage this spirit of donation must remain continuous.
