Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis and opposition lawmaker Elena Akrita have engaged in a public dispute over American singer Madonna's recent visit to the Greek island of Corfu.
The controversy erupted after Akrita, a Member of Parliament representing the main opposition SYRIZA party, condemned published reports stating that residents in a Corfu village were asked to shut their windows to protect the singer's privacy.
Georgiadis responded in a social media post, accusing Akrita of harbouring a culture of misery and failing to recognise the immense economic benefits that high-profile celebrity visits bring to Greece and its working population.
Dispute over local privacy in Corfu village
The political row began after Akrita commented on a published report concerning Madonna's presence in Kouramades, a small rural village located on the island of Corfu. According to the news report cited by the lawmaker, local residents were asked to keep their windows closed to shield the global pop star from prying eyes during her stay.
Akrita questioned whether local residents had actually complied with the request. She stated that the country is not a Southern plantation where residents must gather cotton with bowed heads so as not to spoil someone's birthday celebration.
The opposition lawmaker linked the incident to wider concerns regarding Greek tourism growth, arguing that local land is being sold off, the environment is being sacrificed, and traditional neighbourhoods are being transformed into luxury decorative backdrops.
Akrita also directed criticism at Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, accusing the government of refusing to comment on what she called a shameful and disgraceful event. She asserted that rather than offering a single word of condemnation regarding the report, Mitsotakis had practically sent kisses to the visiting celebrity.
In her online post, Akrita mockingly called on residents to shut their windows so tourists would not be bothered, to stop complaining about land sales and environmental damage, and to turn off their lights, the moon, and their eyes until their neighbourhoods no longer existed. She acknowledged that critics might dismiss her statement as preaching or rhetoric, but maintained that less of such treatment was needed.
Minister defends value of celebrity publicity
Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, a prominent member of the ruling New Democracy party, issued a detailed public rebuttal to Akrita's comments. New Democracy and SYRIZA, the Coalition of the Radical Left, represent the two largest political forces in Greece and frequently debate economic policy, land development, and state governance.
Georgiadis described Akrita as a very wealthy woman who lacked nothing in life. He argued that her financial situation made it difficult for her to understand how vital international tourism is for millions of Greek workers and business owners who depend on the industry for their livelihoods.
The minister maintained that Madonna's visit, social media posts, and public comments provided free global advertising for Greece worth millions of euros. He added that the international exposure generated by the star would directly help citizens in Greece find jobs in the coming year.
Georgiadis expressed frustration that instead of feeling satisfaction over the country's international promotion like any reasonable person, Akrita chose to complain, express bitterness, and level accusations. He categorized her response as part of what he called the gang of misery, concluding with a call for the public and government to stay far away from such attitudes.
