Greece's Ministry of Education has set today, Friday, September 4, 2026, as the deadline for first-year students to complete their electronic registration at the country's Higher Education Institutions, known as AEI.
The process began on August 27 and must be carried out exclusively through the ministry's dedicated online platform. It applies to students who passed this year's Panhellenic Exams, Greece's national university entrance exams, taken by pupils from General Lykeio (GEL) and Vocational Lykeio (EPAL) schools, as well as specific special categories of candidates. Electronic registration is the required administrative step to finalize a student's place at the school or department they were admitted to.
How to register
Successful candidates must use the 2026 Electronic Registration Information System, accessible at eregister.it.minedu.gov.gr. The process is entirely online for the categories covered by the system, with the deadline expiring today.
Panhellenic Exam candidates from GEL and EPAL schools need their eight-digit exam candidate code and the same security password used to access the electronic Mihanografiko, the online form students use to rank their preferred university programs. Anyone who has lost or forgotten the password can generate a new one within the application.
Candidates admitted under the special category for applicants with serious medical conditions log in differently, using the email address they declared on the Mihanografiko and the password created for that application. The ministry has built a detailed user guide into the platform, and since September 1, schools have been offering support to students having trouble accessing the system.
Who must register
Electronic registration is compulsory for 2026 Panhellenic Exam candidates from GEL and EPAL schools, 2026 candidates admitted under the special category for serious medical conditions, and candidates admitted under the special category for Greek citizens belonging to the Muslim Minority of Thrace. The process covers admissions to universities, Higher Ecclesiastical Academies and departments of the School of Pedagogical and Technological Education, known as ASPAITE, according to the official platform.
Who is exempt
Candidates admitted to military academies, police academies, Fire Academy schools, Merchant Marine academies, Coast Guard and Hellenic Coast Guard schools, and the Higher Tourism Education Schools of Crete and Rhodes do not follow this procedure. The deadline and registration method for those schools are set separately by the relevant ministries and the institutions themselves, so candidates admitted to a military or police school should not assume today's platform deadline applies to them.
Students already enrolled elsewhere
Candidates who were already registered in another first-cycle degree program at a Greek AEI or Higher Ecclesiastical Academy must use the same information system to declare the department where they are currently enrolled and simultaneously request their withdrawal, so their registration at the new department can be completed. The ministry flagged this as a point requiring particular attention, since it affects a number of candidates who had already been admitted to a school in previous years before passing into a different department this year.
Special procedure for medical cases
Candidates admitted under the special category for serious medical conditions must complete an additional step after electronic registration by submitting documents to their department's secretariat. These can be delivered in person by the candidate or an authorized representative, or sent by registered mail with proof of receipt. The required documents include a copy of an identity document or other official paper, a certificate of secondary school completion, and a certificate confirming the medical condition, as set out in the relevant procedure.
Thrace's Muslim Minority category
Candidates admitted under the special category for Greek citizens belonging to the Muslim Minority of Thrace complete their electronic registration through the same platform. Within the same period, they must also send by courier, or submit directly to their school's secretariat, a certificate proving they are listed on the municipal roll of a municipality in the Xanthi, Rodopi or Evros regional units. A separate provision covers candidates who have since transferred to a municipality in another area.
How many students are enrolling
According to figures released by the Ministry of Education on the results of the 2026 Panhellenic Exams, 70,593 candidates took part in the selection process, 60,584 of them through GEL schools and 10,009 through EPAL schools.
In total, 63,609 GEL and EPAL candidates were admitted to universities, Higher Ecclesiastical Academies, ASPAITE, Higher Tourism Education Schools, military and police academies, and Fire Academy, Merchant Marine and Coast Guard schools. That figure does not match the number of students completing registration through today's platform, since it also includes schools where registration is handled separately.
What comes after registration
Once electronic registration is complete, each university informs its new students of the next steps, which can include activating an institutional account, issuing an academic ID card, gaining access to the institution's online services, course enrollment procedures and, where applicable, student welfare services. The ministry advises first-year students to keep checking their school's website and announcements, since several of the following procedures are determined by each university individually.
Transfers and student housing
For first-year students planning to apply for a university transfer, the ministry has again said the process will run earlier this year, with the aim of completing the main stage by mid-October. Electronic registration at the school where a student was admitted remains a necessary step in its own right and is a separate process from a transfer application.
The state also provides a student housing allowance, which varies by case: 1,500 euros, rising to 2,000 euros for recipients studying at an AEI outside Attica and the Thessaloniki Regional Unit, and 2,500 euros for students sharing accommodation under the prescribed conditions. Total funding for the housing allowance in 2026 reached 90 million euros, according to the Ministry of Education.
This year's application window for the 2025-2026 academic year's housing allowance ran until July 31, 2026, so new first-year students should not assume today's registration automatically opens a new deadline for the allowance. The ministry says applicants should wait for its announcement ahead of each future application period.
