Google announced a new digital infrastructure project called Americas Connect on Tuesday to build three submarine cables across the Caribbean and the Pacific. The project will strengthen digital connections between the Americas, the Caribbean region, and Europe, according to a statement released in Panama and cited by EFE.

The infrastructure includes the Alisios cable connecting the Dominican Republic, Panama, and Chile, as well as the Canoa cable linking the Dominican Republic to Bermuda. A third cable named OlaLuz will link the Dominican Republic to Florida in the southern United States.
Google will also create a branch extension from its existing Firmina subsea cable to the Dominican Republic. That extension expands the reach of the Firmina infrastructure, which was designed to link North America to South America.
Pacific and Caribbean routes
In the Pacific Ocean, Google will create a submarine ring of redundant routes connecting Chile to Panama. A third link will run between Panama and the west coast of the United States, providing connectivity to Google Cloud regions in Chile, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.
The Alisios cable takes its name from the trade winds that prevail in the Caribbean region. It will run from Panama to the Dominican Republic, connecting through a network ring to the east coast of the United States and Google Cloud regions in South Carolina and Virginia.
The Alisios line and the Firmina branch will both meet in the Dominican Republic with the OlaLuz cable. The OlaLuz cable name combines the words for wave and light in reference to optical fiber, making a direct link to Florida on the southern coast of the United States.
Atlantic routes and European links
In the Atlantic Ocean, the Canoa cable will link the Dominican Republic to Bermuda. It will connect with existing subsea lines Nuvem and Sol through rings running toward both the United States and Madrid, establishing connectivity between Europe and America.
The existing Curie cable will also join Nuvem and Sol in connecting with the new routes. These interconnections form redundant network rings heading toward both the United States and Europe.
Google stated that the Americas Connect project improves connectivity reach, reliability, and resilience. The company added that the infrastructure provides diverse submarine routes and connects geographically separated Google Cloud regions.
