DxOMark, the camera testing laboratory, has scored the main camera of Google's newly released flagship phone, the Pixel 11 Pro XL, and found it to be one of the best on the market.
The device earned 168 points, five more than its predecessor, the Pixel 10 Pro XL. That result placed the phone joint fifth in DxOMark's overall ranking, level with the iPhone 17 Pro and the Oppo Find X8 Ultra. Only the Vivo X300 Ultra, Oppo Find X9 Ultra, Vivo X300 Pro and Huawei Pura 80 Ultra scored higher.
Triple camera system
The Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL share an identical three-camera setup. The main module has a 50-megapixel sensor, an f/1.7 aperture and a 1/1.3-inch sensor size. It is joined by a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera with an f/1.7 aperture and a macro mode, plus a 48-megapixel telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom.
During testing, DxOMark's experts noted a wide dynamic range, rich colours and natural skin tone rendering in all lighting conditions. The upgraded telephoto lens produces more detailed shots, which the testers called one of the main improvements in this generation's camera.
Where the Pixel falls short of the iPhone
The main weak point of the primary camera system remains the ultra-wide module, whose photos show fewer details and excessive contrast, according to DxOMark.
More noticeable problems appear during video recording. DxOMark pointed to shortcomings in stabilisation, motion handling and low-light footage, areas where the Pixel 11 Pro XL cannot match the iPhone 17 Pro.
The front camera scored 151 points, DxOMark found, behind only the iPhone 17 Pro's 154. Even there, the lab noted flaws: in low light, detail is lost, noise and colour distortion appear, and faces can look overly sharp. During group selfies, depth of field is sometimes insufficient to keep everyone in focus at once.
Overall, DxOMark rated the Google Pixel 11 Pro XL as a well balanced camera phone. It did not become the new leader of the ranking but came close to the market's strongest flagships and matched the iPhone 17 Pro on overall camera score.

What's next for iPhone cameras
According to reports, Apple is preparing a major camera upgrade for the iPhone 18 Pro, with a variable aperture on the main camera expected to be the headline feature, noticeably improving low-light image quality.
