A video showing Giorgos Mazonakis's mother, Kleio Mazonaki, dancing a traditional zeimbekiko at one of her son's concerts has resurfaced online, days after the Greek singer died on September 9 at the age of 54.
The footage was filmed four years ago, in September 2022, at a concert Mazonakis gave at the Katrakeio Theatre in Nikaia, near Piraeus. The venue regularly hosts open-air concerts. The evening held special meaning for the singer, as his parents were in the audience, and he had reportedly been searching for them with his eyes from the start of the show.
The moment at the Katrakeio concert
While performing his song "Ores Mikres," Mazonakis stopped the musicians and turned to his father, asking him to bring his mother up on stage. He said that at that point he wanted to tell his father to bring his mother up on stage to dance a zeimbekiko if she felt like it, because if she did not feel like it, she might end up cursing at him.
Kleio Mazonaki responded to her son's call and climbed onto the stage. Video from the concert shows the singer kneeling in front of her, singing, while she danced the zeimbekiko, a slow, largely improvised solo dance in Greek music that is often performed at emotional or symbolic moments.
The gesture and his mother's dance drew warm applause from the audience, who watched the family moment unfold, according to the report.
Cardiac arrest at a Kolonaki clinic
Mazonakis died at 54 after suffering a cardiac arrest while at a clinic in the Kolonaki district of Athens.
The events unfolded on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 9, when the singer went to the Stem Cell clinic at 11 Karneadou Street. According to information available so far, he had an appointment for a treatment ahead of a number of professional commitments he had in the coming period.
During the process of inserting an intravenous catheter, Mazonakis reportedly felt intense chest pain and then suffered cardiac arrest. The clinic called EKAB, Greece's national emergency ambulance service, and was told the singer had suffered a heart attack. The call was placed at 4:21pm.
Seven minutes later, at 4:28pm, an EKAB paramedic arrived at the clinic by motorcycle and immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. An EKAB ambulance reached the scene shortly afterwards and took Mazonakis to the nearest hospital on emergency duty, Elpis, where he arrived at 4:45pm.
Resuscitation efforts continued in the emergency department but were unsuccessful. Despite doctors' attempts, his condition proved irreversible, and his death was formally confirmed at 5:40pm.
Hospital's statement
Elpis Hospital said that on September 9, 2026, at 4:45pm, Mazonakis, who was born in 1972, had been brought in by EKAB ambulance with no spontaneous breathing and no pulse. The hospital said cardiopulmonary resuscitation had been carried out according to protocol without a successful outcome, and that the official time of death was 5:40pm. Hospital management and staff said they extended their sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the singer.
Sisters arrive at the hospital
After news of his death emerged, Mazonakis's sisters, Maria and Vaso, arrived at the hospital and were seen embracing. Maria was the first to reach Elpis, holding her head in her hands, unable to believe the tragic news, according to the report.
