Greek singer Giorgos Livanis said he remains numb following the sudden death of fellow artist Giorgos Mazonakis from cardiac arrest at age 54. Speaking on camera to the morning television show Happy Day on Monday, September 21, Livanis reflected on the unexpected loss of his colleague, who died on September 9.
Livanis revealed that he and Mazonakis had been scheduled to perform together at an Athens nightclub during the upcoming season. He stated that all arrangements for the joint residency had been completed, right down to the scheduling of a promotional photoshoot.
According to Livanis, the two singers had scheduled their photoshoot for the venue on Monday. He explained that everything was prepared and that they had accomplished good work together, adding that colleagues and friends are now praying for Mazonakis to be at peace.
Planned Athens Collaboration
The comments follow a tribute that Livanis paid to Mazonakis at the Alsos Theatre one day after news of the singer's death emerged. During a staging of the theatrical performance The Boy Opposite, Livanis addressed the audience to honour his late colleague.
Addressing the crowd, Livanis said the artistic community was saying goodbye to a major and unique performer. He told audience members that he and the entire cast were deeply moved and saddened by the loss, before calling on the hall to offer a massive round of applause in memory of Mazonakis.
Livanis noted during the performance that he had been looking forward to sharing the stage with Mazonakis again this season, though the partnership could not be realized. He added that Mazonakis would have wanted fellow artists and fans to continue singing his music long into the future.
Theatre Tribute And Musical Farewell
Following his address, Livanis performed the popular Mazonakis track Small Hours alongside fellow members of the theatrical cast. A large image of Mazonakis was displayed behind the performers as they sang.
The performance concluded with sustained applause from the audience at the Alsos Theatre, with one spectator calling out a final farewell to the late singer as the music ended.
Mazonakis was a prominent figure in contemporary Greek music with a career spanning several decades, while Livanis is a well-known contemporary Greek vocalist and stage performer.
