More than 15 new electric vehicles are being discounted by £3,750 under the UK government's Electric Car Grant (ECG), provided they have been classified as having the maximum sustainability score for their manufacturing process. All the qualifying models cost under £37,000 and receive the scheme's full Band One grant, worth almost £4,000.
The ECG replaces the Conservatives' Plug-in Car Grant, which was scrapped in 2022. Since the ECG launched on July 15, it has helped more than 140,000 drivers save thousands of pounds on a new car.
The cars that qualify
Alpine A290+, priced from £30,245 with the ECG, is a sporty French hatchback made by Renault's racing brand. It offers up to 220hp, a range of up to 236 miles, 326 litres of boot space and five seats.
BMW iX1, priced from £33,315 with the ECG, is a mid-sized luxury SUV that takes styling cues from the X3, X5 and iX. It has a 21-inch curved screen, an official range of between 257 and 272 miles, can recharge from 10 to 80 per cent in 30 minutes and has a 490-litre boot.
BMW iX2, also priced from £33,315 with the ECG, is the coupe version of the iX1, aimed at buyers who want a sportier-looking SUV. Both the eDrive20 Sport and M Sport versions qualify for the grant, with the M Sport covering 0 to 62mph in 8.6 seconds and a maximum range of 320 miles.
Citroen e-C5 Aircross Long Range, priced from £35,205 with the ECG, is Citroen's all-electric SUV, capable of travelling 421 miles on a single charge. It has a 97kWh battery, a 230hp motor, generous passenger space and a 10-inch cascading screen.
Fiat 500e, priced at £20,995 with the ECG, is the electric version of the popular supermini. It offers 199 miles of range, rapid charging to 80 per cent in 30 minutes, 16-inch alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch central touchscreen and a 7-inch driver's display.
Ford E-Tourneo Courier, priced at £29,940 with the ECG, is the only five-seat MPV on the list. It has a range of 198 miles, can recharge from 10 to 80 per cent in 26 minutes or add 69 miles of range in 10 minutes, and offers up to 2,162 litres of luggage space along with a customisable centre-console storage area.
Ford Puma Gen-E, priced from £26,245 with the ECG, was Ford's first EV priced under £30,000 and is now cheaper still. It has a range of 259 miles, charges from 10 to 80 per cent in 26 minutes, and comes with a 12-inch touchscreen and a B&O sound system. Combining its boot, an interior "Gigabox" underfloor compartment and a front boot gives it 566 litres of storage.
Hyundai Kona Electric, priced from £31,250 with the ECG, was one of the first mass-market family electric SUVs when it launched in 2018. Available in three variants with up to 319 miles of range, it has a rear bench designed to maximise second-row space, a 466-litre boot and a 27-litre front trunk.
Kia EV2 Long Range, priced from £24,245 with the ECG, is a compact, boxy SUV with a 61kWh battery and a range of up to 275 miles. It can fast-charge from 10 to 80 per cent in 29 minutes and has heated front seats, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch driver's display and a 5.3-inch climate-control screen.
Kia EV4, priced from £33,245 with the ECG, is Kia's spacious electric hatchback, with relaxation seats featuring theatre and rest modes and animated ambient lighting. It has a range of up to 391 miles and can recharge from 10 to 80 per cent in under 31 minutes.
Mini Countryman Electric, priced from £33,005 with the ECG, is the first and only BMW-made EV to have been granted the ECG. It features Mini's ALL4 all-wheel-drive system, up to 313hp and a range of up to 310 miles.
Nissan Leaf 52kWh, priced at £28,849 with the ECG, is now in its third generation and has been redesigned as a crossover. It has a range of 387 miles, can fast-charge from 10 to 80 per cent in as little as 35 minutes, and features dual screens with Google Built-in, a dimming panoramic sunroof and voice assistance.
Nissan Micra 52kWh, priced from £32,249 with the ECG, revives the supermini nameplate as a small electric car. It offers up to 257 miles of range, fast charging from 15 to 80 per cent in 30 minutes, and an interior made from sustainable materials with dual 10.1-inch displays and Google Built-in.
Renault 4 E-Tech 52kWh, priced from £23,445 with the ECG, brings back the Renault 4 as a fully electric compact SUV with retro styling, including roof rails and a boxy silhouette. It has a claimed range of 398 miles, a top speed of 93mph, dual 10-inch screens and 23.1 litres of cabin storage.
Renault 5 E-Tech 52kWh, priced from £21,495 with the ECG, is the only new EV to have attracted a waiting list. Its funky exterior is matched by a multi-coloured denim-themed cabin with dual 10-inch screens, an Arkamys sound system and a lipstick tube-style gear selector. It is designed primarily for urban use, with a range of up to 250 miles and rapid charging support.
Renault Scenic Techno E-Tech, priced from £33,245 with the ECG, is a more family-focused option than the R4 or R5, delivering 220hp and a range of up to 381 miles. Renault says 89 per cent of the vehicle is recyclable, which helped it achieve the maximum ECG sustainability rating. It also has a 545-litre boot, 30 safety systems and access to more than 100 apps through Google Built-in.
The list of models eligible for the full £3,750 ECG grant was correct at the time of publishing, and more EVs are expected to be added to the scheme at a later date.
