Russian authorities have detained a former deputy in Crimea after the body of a 12-year-old schoolgirl was found buried in his yard, the Telegram channel Mash reported. A criminal case has been opened against him on charges of causing death by negligence.

According to Mash, the man is 64 years old and, in addition to having served as a deputy, held the post of director of a House of Culture. He said the girl, from the village of Chaykino in Crimea's Dzhankoy district, rode her bicycle to his home and asked him to buy her a canister of liquefied gas, which she then sniffed and lost consciousness.

Man's account of the death

The man said he panicked, carried the girl into his house and tried to revive her but was unable to. He then said he put her body in a pit in his backyard and buried her.

Forensic findings

After the girl's body was discovered, specialists conducted forensic examinations. They determined she died of asphyxiation after being poisoned by an unknown substance, and found no visible external signs of a violent death.
