Finnish authorities have launched an investigation after a surveillance drone was discovered on the southern coast of Finland near Porvoo.
The Finnish Border Guard announced on Friday that law enforcement and border officials are examining whether the unmanned aircraft violated the national territory of the Nordic country.
Investigators are seeking to establish where, when and how the drone entered Finnish territory, as well as how it may have crossed the border. The enquiry is being conducted in close cooperation with other state authorities, according to news agency Reuters.
A preliminary examination indicates that the aircraft is a Geoscan 701 model drone. Officials noted that this particular model is commonly operated by both government agencies and civilian organizations.
The Border Guard stated that it is currently unable to confirm the origin, the operator or the intended purpose of the aircraft at this stage of the investigation.
Safety assessment and location
Finland's Ministry of Defense reported that the drone is designed for topographic survey work and aerial mapping. Defense officials confirmed that the device does not pose any safety risk or danger to the public.
The unmanned vehicle was originally discovered along the shoreline of Porvoo on Tuesday, September 1.
Porvoo is a historic coastal city located in southern Finland along the Gulf of Finland, roughly 50 kilometers east of Helsinki. The southern maritime border faces the Baltic Sea region, where national border authorities maintain continuous surveillance over territorial waters and airspace.
The Finnish Border Guard serves as the national security agency responsible for safeguarding Finland's land and sea borders under the Ministry of the Interior. Unmanned aerial vehicles like the Geoscan 701 are typically deployed for industrial photogrammetry, land mapping and environmental monitoring.

In a separate defense development reported alongside the investigation, a massive attack by Ukrainian armed forces using unmanned strike vehicles caused a fire at a fuel storage facility in the Russian city of Sochi.
Sochi is a Russian port city and resort hub located on the eastern coast of the Black Sea in southwestern Russia.
Finnish border authorities said the investigation into the Porvoo drone incident remains active as agencies work to trace the flight route and determine how the aircraft arrived on the southern coast.
