The 50th edition of Festa do Avante! opens on Friday, September 4, 2026, bringing more than 60 concerts, political debates, and cultural events to Quinta da Atalaia in Amora, Seixal.
Organized by the Portuguese Communist Party, the annual three-day festival runs through Sunday, September 6. The program combines musical performances with film screenings, theatre productions, literary discussions, scientific workshops, sports tournaments, and regional gastronomy.
The festival takes place at Quinta da Atalaia, a large estate located in the parish of Amora within the municipality of Seixal. Situated on the south bank of the Tagus River estuary across from Lisbon, Quinta da Atalaia has served as the permanent site for the gathering since 1990, accommodating regional pavilions, political debate arenas, and multiple performance stages.
The Portuguese Communist Party founded Festa do Avante! in 1976, naming the event after its official newspaper, Avante!. Over five decades, the gathering has developed into one of Portugal's largest annual political and cultural festivals, drawing visitors from across the country every September.
Musical Lineup and Guest Collaborations
More than 60 concerts are scheduled across the weekend, featuring artists representing a wide variety of musical genres and generations. The festival lineup includes Carolina Deslandes, Carlão, Ivandro, António Zambujo, Bombino, Yuri da Cunha, Aldina Duarte, The Black Mamba, and JP Simões.
The main music program highlights prominent figures from Portuguese pop, hip-hop, fado, and international world music. Pop singer Carolina Deslandes and rapper Carlão appear alongside fado singer Aldina Duarte and vocalist António Zambujo, who blends fado with traditional Alentejan vocal music. International performers include Tuareg guitarist Bombino from Niger and Angolan musician Yuri da Cunha.
The 2026 program also features several special joint musical performances. Guitarist Pedro Jóia will perform with invited guest Ney Matogrosso, the veteran Brazilian singer. Singer Tim performs alongside jazz pianist Mário Laginha, Pedro Jóia, and the TuttiEncantus Female Choir. Singer Janita Salomé shares the stage with vocalists Maria João and Ana Bacalhau.
These collaborative concerts bring together major figures from Portuguese and lusophone music history. Tim is widely recognized as the frontman of the long-running Portuguese rock band Xutos & Pontapés, while Mário Laginha and Maria João have a history of jazz collaborations. Ana Bacalhau formerly led the indie-folk group Deolinda, and Ney Matogrosso is a prominent figure in Brazilian popular music.
Regional Food Pavilions and Cultural Venues
Food and dining form another main attraction at the festival, which features approximately 70 regional and international gastronomic pavilions. The venues serve traditional dishes from all across Portugal, including the Alentejo region, the Minho region, and the Atlantic archipelagos of Azores and Madeira, as well as meals from around the world.
The regional pavilions are run by local party organizations and cultural groups representing Portugal's distinct geographic areas. Stalls from the southern Alentejo region traditionally offer regional wines, cured meats, and bread soups, while Minho pavilions serve northwestern regional dishes and island delegations present culinary specialties from Madeira and the Azores.
Visitors seeking non-musical activities can visit specialized spaces across the grounds. The Book Fair, known as Festa do Livro, and the CineAvante! venue host political debates, book releases, and film screenings. The Avanteatro space presents plays by visiting theatre companies for diverse audiences, while the Espaço das Artes exhibits fine arts displays.
Interactive activities for science, sports, and families are also available throughout the venue. The Espaço Ciência conducts practical workshops and discussions on scientific topics. The sports complex hosts competitive tournaments and sports demonstrations, while the Youth City, known as Cidade da Juventude, and the Children's Space, known as Espaço Criança, provide educational activities, workshops, and family sessions.
