Netflix has released the official trailer for its upcoming television series adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel East of Eden starring Florence Pugh. The Oscar-nominated British actress takes the leading role of Cathy Ames in the new project based on the 1952 literary masterpiece by the American author.
Screenwriter and actress Zoe Kazan adapted the book for the screen and serves as executive producer on the seven-episode drama. The limited series explores how a family's historical legacy directly impacts an individual's present reality, following characters who settle in California's agricultural Salinas Valley.
In the drama, the life of Cathy Ames becomes deeply intertwined with the Trask family, specifically brothers Adam Trask, played by Christopher Abbott, and Charles Trask, played by Mike Faist. As the narrative unfolds across generations, their lives intersect with members of the local Hamilton family.
Salinas Valley characters and cast
The Hamilton family storyline includes Samuel Hamilton, played by Ciarán Hinds, an Irish immigrant who arrives in California, raises a family and develops an intimate knowledge of the land. They are joined by Lee, played by Hoon Lee, a Chinese American man whose sharp intellect is matched by his devotion to caring for those most in need.
Martha Plimpton also stars as Faye, the owner of a local brothel whose open-hearted nature threatens to become her ultimate undoing.
Screenplay and family heritage
The project carries significant personal history for its creator. Steinbeck's novel was famously adapted for the big screen in 1955 in a classic feature film directed by Zoe Kazan's grandfather, the Oscar-winning director Elia Kazan. That iconic Hollywood film starred James Dean alongside Raymond Massey, Richard Davalos, Jo Van Fleet and Julie Harris.
Reflecting on the announcement of the production, Zoe Kazan said that in bringing the family saga to television she was mindful of her family's historic connection to the material. However, she noted that it was Steinbeck's writing, which she described as personal, shocking, profound and free, that had captivated her since she first read the book as a young teenager.
Kazan added that developing the adaptation had been her greatest professional joy. She expressed excitement about the ensemble cast and production team assembled for the project and thanked executive partners Netflix, Fifth Season and Anonymous Content for their financial and creative backing.

The seven-part miniseries is co-produced by Fifth Season and Anonymous Content alongside Netflix. The streaming platform confirmed that East of Eden will premiere worldwide on October 1.
