A driver in his fifties lost his license on Tuesday after gendarmes clocked him doing 137 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on a road in Cambiac, southeast of Toulouse in Haute-Garonne.
The stop happened around 1:15 p.m. on the RD18 departmental road, when a patrol from the Villefranche-de-Lauragais motorized squadron intercepted the driver of a Kia e-Niro. The speed officially recorded for the case was 130 km/h, more than 50 km/h above the posted limit.
License suspended, car impounded
Gendarmes suspended the man's driving license on the spot following the stop. They also placed his vehicle in administrative impoundment.
According to the Haute-Garonne gendarmerie, the driver himself admitted the seriousness of the situation during his arrest. He acknowledged to the gendarmes that this was not simple speeding but dangerous behavior. He is expected to appear in court to answer for his actions.
Road deaths rising in Haute-Garonne
Road safety figures for the first six months of the year show 26 deaths on roads in the department. Men accounted for the large majority of victims, 23 of the 26.
Over the same period, the department has seen a worrying rise in fatal accidents linked to alcohol consumption, along with an increase in deaths among seniors.
