Footage from a newly installed security camera revealed that the dog was reacting to Barnaby, a neighbour's three-legged ginger tabby cat that limped past the front door at the exact same time every night.

For several consecutive months, Buster would get up around 3:00 am, walk to the doorway of the room, and stare into the pitch-black corridor leading toward the main apartment entrance while growling quietly for 20 minutes.

The owner admitted that he had naturally been convinced his apartment was haunted or that an intruder was lurking outside his door. He purchased a deadbolt lock, kept a high-powered flashlight on his nightstand, and spent numerous nights awake listening for hallway footsteps with a pounding heart, though looking through the peephole never showed anyone there.

Security camera revelation

Exhausted by sleepless nights, the owner set up a small security camera in the hallway to confirm whether he was losing his sanity. Upon reviewing the recording the next morning, he found himself unable to stop laughing.

The video camera recorded a faint, rhythmic clacking sound at 2:58 am. A minute later, a large three-legged ginger tabby cat named Barnaby walked across the carpeted hallway right in front of the door, stopped at the mat to scratch his ear on the doorframe, and then limped back to his owner's flat.

The pet owner explained that Buster was not sensing a Victorian ghost or a burglar. Instead, the dog was simply furious that the neighbour's cat was trespassing on his territory at the exact same hour every night.

Background on canine territorial behavior

Dogs are highly territorial animals with acute senses of hearing and smell that often pick up subtle movements outside a home long before humans notice them. Low growling near doorways is a common protective instinct when a domestic pet perceives an unfamiliar animal approaching its home boundaries.

Many pet owners turn to home surveillance cameras to solve unexplained night-time animal activity. Reddit communities frequently host viral discussions where pet owners share unusual animal habits, surveillance discoveries, and lighthearted domestic mysteries.

A peaceful resolution

To resolve the nightly confrontation, the owner placed a small bowl of pet treats further down the hallway away from his front door that very evening.

Barnaby now happily enjoys the treats during his nightly walks, while Buster sleeps soundly on the carpet, completely cured of his months-long obsession.

The incident follows a similar pet-related viral report in which a woman's walk with a date went awry after his dog's keen sense of smell kept distracting the animal throughout their stroll.
