Disney+ has debuted the French workplace comedy series Surveillant!, featuring an ensemble cast led by actors Jean-Pascal Zadi, Audrey Lamy, Benjamin Tranié, and Eva Huault.
The series focuses on the daily operations of the fictional Chénoise detention center, managed by director Corinne, played by Audrey Lamy. Corinne is depicted as an empathetic administrator who looks after both the inmates and her absent-minded colleagues. Her professional life becomes complicated when her estranged son, with whom she cut ties years ago, is incarcerated inside her own facility.
Alongside Lamy, actor Jean-Pascal Zadi portrays a correctional officer searching for love among his fellow prison staff. The comedy features several prominent figures from the French comedy scene behind bars, including guest appearances and supporting roles by François Damiens, Gustave Kervern, Jérémy Nadeau, and Hakim Jemili.
Inspirations from classic workplace comedy
Reflecting on the tone of the show, Lamy stated that the series shares strong similarities with H, the hit French hospital comedy starring Éric Judor and Ramzy Bedia. She explained that the cast members portray outlandish and unhinged characters placed within a serious institutional backdrop, attempting to perform their duties despite lacking the proper tools to manage the chaos.
The sitcom H, which originally aired on Canal+ from 1998 to 2002, set a precedent for French ensemble TV comedies by finding humor in suburban institutional life. Zadi observed that director John Wax constructed the comedic scenarios of Surveillant! from the dramatic foundation of the correctional system, noting his belief that the finest comedy projects consistently originate from genuine human drama.
Breakout role for Eva Huault
While the production relies on an established ensemble, co-star Eva Huault has emerged as the standout performer of the cast. Fellow actor Benjamin Tranié praised Huault as an exceptional talent and hard worker, stating that he was delighted by her career progress and describing her as a wonderful colleague.
Zadi supported that assessment, stating that Huault has demonstrated only ten percent of her full acting capabilities so far. He remarked that film directors across the industry are eager to cast her because of her captivating screen presence.
Huault was initially discovered at a summer camp at age ten before starring in the feature film Shana, directed by Lila Pinell. Following her breakthrough in Pinell's movie, the young actress has maintained a continuous schedule of feature film and television shooting engagements.

The arrival of Surveillant! adds a major French comedy title to Disney+, the global streaming service owned by The Walt Disney Company. With all episodes now available for subscribers, the ultimate success of the wild prison satire depends on how television audiences respond to its irreverent humor.
