Dayron Z: Missing eight-year-old boy found dead in Cusco

Eight-year-old Dayron Z has been found dead in a deep pool of water in Cusco, Peru, three days after he vanished while playing near home.

The boy was found on the morning of Friday, 6 November, inside a stagnant water reservoir in the Misachayo sector of the San Jeronimo district. The four-metre-deep pool is located close to the child's family residence, alongside an unpaved vehicle track where local residents frequently travel.

Colonel Carlos Guizado, the acting head of the Cusco Police Region of the Peruvian National Police, confirmed that authorities were notified of the discovery at 11:48 a.m. on Friday. Responding officers and emergency specialists located the eight-year-old submerged in the deep water collection basin.

Guizado stated that preliminary assessments of the child's body revealed no obvious external injuries or signs of violence. The regional police commander refrained from offering hypotheses regarding the cause of death or explaining how the boy entered the reservoir, stating that those conclusions must await formal scientific inquiries.

Discovery in Misachayo sector

Police immediately informed the Public Ministry to coordinate legal procedures and oversee the retrieval of the body. Forensic experts from the national police criminalistics unit and detectives from the criminal investigation division were dispatched to the site in Misachayo to inspect the ground and conduct preliminary inquiries.

The Public Ministry, which operates as Peru's independent state prosecution service, has taken charge of directing the legal proceedings. Prosecutors must establish the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy and determine whether third parties bear any criminal responsibility for the child's death.

In Peru, the Public Ministry routinely supervises unattended death investigations alongside police forensic teams, ordering autopsies to determine whether a death was accidental or the result of negligence or foul play. Investigators in Cusco will examine whether the deep pool lacked required perimeter fencing or safety coverings near public walking routes.

San Jeronimo is one of eight districts comprising the province of Cusco, situated in the southern Peruvian Andes at an elevation exceeding 3,200 metres above sea level. While the urban centre of Cusco is heavily developed, peripheral sectors such as Misachayo feature rural roads, farmland, and unpaved vehicle tracks where rainwater can collect in deep excavation pits.

Search efforts and community protests

Dayron had been missing since Tuesday, 3 November, when he disappeared while playing in the surroundings of his family home in San Jeronimo. Following his disappearance, his family, neighbours, and teachers organised community search parties and urged regional authorities to mount an intensive search operation.

Tensions rose on the eve of the discovery as hours passed without news of the child. A group of parents and relatives walked to the headquarters of the Cusco Police Region to demand greater urgency, higher priority, and faster action from senior officers, expressing severe concern over the boy's welfare.

Guizado explained that following the initial missing person report, regional police leaders formed a dedicated search and rescue unit from specialised police squads. Those personnel worked in coordination with officers from the local San Jeronimo police station to scour nearby fields, pathways, and residential zones.

School community mourns young pupil

The confirmation of Dayron's death has brought deep sorrow to the San Jeronimo community and the wider Cusco region. The eight-year-old was a pupil at the Virgen de la Merced school in Chimpahuaylla, where he studied in the third grade A classroom.

Classmates, teachers, and parents from the Chimpahuaylla school had actively mobilised alongside Dayron's relatives throughout the three-day search, distributing notices and appealing for public assistance. News of his death has left the educational community in deep mourning.

Family members are now awaiting the findings of the post-mortem examination and the formal inquiries launched by the police and the Public Ministry. Relatives have expressed hope that the official investigations will soon clarify the full circumstances of the tragedy and provide answers about what happened.
