Courteney Cox has directed her daughter, Coco Arquette, in her new film "Evil Genius," a dark true-crime comedy that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Cox, 62, had Coco, 22, with her former husband David Arquette, who also appears in the movie.
Speaking about the experience of working together, Cox said she did not need to be overprotective of her only daughter during filming. She joked that she was more likely to tell Coco to "concentrate," before clarifying she was only joking, in an interview with E! News.
Talking about her daughter, Cox said Coco could stand on her own and that she did not need to be protective of her. She added that she had of course loved having Coco on set, and that everyone on the production had loved her too, describing her daughter as a small force of nature and an excellent actress.
David Arquette's role in the film
David Arquette, Cox's former husband and Coco's father, also stars in "Evil Genius." Arquette is best known for his roles in the "Scream" horror franchise, while Cox rose to fame playing Monica Geller in the sitcom "Friends." The two were married for eleven years before divorcing, and Coco is their only child together.
Tributes for Coco's birthday
Cox's comments came three months after Coco's birthday, which both of her parents marked with posts on Instagram at the time.
Cox shared two photographs of her daughter alongside a message wishing her a happy birthday, calling Coco a wise soul, the funniest person she knows and a life teacher for her, and telling her she loved her.
One of the photos was recent, showing mother and daughter smiling cheek to cheek. The other was from Coco's childhood, showing Cox holding her daughter in the sea.
