Scientific research is questioning global centenarian longevity records and blue zones after academic studies revealed widespread census errors and data fraud. Recent reviews show that many individuals recorded as living past 100 years of age may actually be younger due to misreported records, missing documentation, or pension scams.
The findings emerge as the regional government of Galicia in Spain launches a new registry to study its population of people over 100 years old. Known as the Rexistro Galego de Persoas Centenarias, or Regace, the initiative was created by the regional health ministry, the Consejería de Sanidad, to track an estimated 1,500 centenarians.
Galicia accounts for 12 percent of all centenarians in Spain. Local health authorities aim to collect sociodemographic, statistical, clinical, and epidemiological data to understand the factors driving extreme longevity in the region.
Across the globe, researchers estimate that nearly 800,000 people are aged 100 or older. The highest numbers are concentrated in Japan and the United States, while France, Germany, and Spain lead European rankings for centenarian populations.
Debate over longevity hot spots
The term blue zones was coined roughly 20 years ago to describe geographic regions with unusually high numbers of elderly residents. To qualify, a region must demonstrate exceptional rates of nonagenarians and centenarians sustained over a period of 150 years.
While the designation is not officially validated by science, it serves as a valuable promotional label. Five areas are widely cited for high concentrations of healthy elderly inhabitants: Sardinia, Okinawa, Nicoya in Costa Rica, Ikaria in Greece, and the French overseas territory of Martinique.
Since 2025, at least three academic reviews have cast significant doubt on the concept of longevity hot spots. Critics argue that regional claims rely on faulty demographic data rather than unique environmental or genetic factors.
In May 2025, the Colombian journal Revista Salud Pública published a study titled Blue Zones, the Real Color of the Planet's Most Long-Lived Territories. Researchers from the National University of Colombia and Newcastle University in Australia found that many centenarian records stemmed from collection errors or fraudulent documentation, particularly in lower-resource regions.
Statistical errors in centenarian data
Oxford researcher Saul Justin Newman detailed further discrepancies in his book Dismantling Modern Longevity Science. Newman, a prominent skeptic of the anti-aging movement, asserted that hundreds of centenarian claims are fraudulent.
Newman explained that statistical distortion accumulates at the apex of demographic pyramids when small age errors compound over decades. Missing records, administrative mistakes, and deliberate age inflation to claim pensions or enter schools early skew public databases.
In a theoretical model of 100,000 50-year-olds with a 0.1 percent registration error, false ages expand over time because mortality rates double every eight years after age 30. The misreported group has a higher statistical probability of surviving into subsequent decades.
By age 60, the false cohort represents 0.4 percent of the population census. By the time the group reaches 100 years of age, Newman reported that these registration errors distort centenarian lists by more than 20 percent.
Impact on medical research
The growing skepticism presents a major challenge to longevity science, where centenarians are studied to uncover genetic traits, lifestyle habits, and dietary patterns associated with healthy aging.
Researchers warned that if demographic databases cannot guarantee exact ages or validate regional claims, medical studies built on centenarian populations risk producing flawed conclusions. Scientists emphasized the need to verify age records before pursuing biological pathways to healthy maturation.
