Céline Dion has chosen to return to the stage in France after a long silence caused by her illness, and French broadcaster TF1 said the choice was no accident. The Quebec singer's relationship with France, TF1 reported, amounts to an almost fusional love story built up over decades.
TF1 traced the bond back to Dion's early, tentative years performing in France before she became a global star. It said the relationship deepened through her celebrated collaboration with French singer-songwriter Jean-Jacques Goldman, who wrote and produced some of her best known French-language material.
The Goldman partnership
Goldman is one of France's most successful songwriters, and his work with Dion produced the 1995 album D'eux, which became the best-selling French-language album of all time. TF1 said that partnership helped cement a unique connection between Dion and French audiences that has endured ever since.
The Eiffel Tower moment
TF1 also pointed to Dion's performance at the Eiffel Tower during the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as another high point in that relationship, calling it an unforgettable moment for French viewers. The broadcaster said the performance, staged on one of Paris's most recognisable landmarks in front of a global audience, reinforced the singer's standing in the country.
Dion's return to performing comes after she stepped back from the stage because of health problems. She revealed in December 2022 that she had been diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that affects muscle stiffness and mobility and had forced her to cancel touring commitments.
Affection that has not faded
TF1 said that despite her long absence, French audiences' affection for Dion has not wavered, describing it as an attachment without a single false note. The broadcaster framed her decision to perform again in France as a natural continuation of a relationship between the singer and the country that has lasted her entire career.
