CATL unveils battery that charges to 80% in 224 seconds

CATL has demonstrated a consumer battery pack that charges from 10 to 80 percent in 3 minutes and 44 seconds, the world’s largest electric vehicle battery maker’s sharpest fast-charge result to date.

The battery is not yet fitted to any production vehicle, making direct comparisons with rival technologies difficult. BYD claims its Blade 2.0 battery charges from 10 to 70 percent in five minutes, while Geely says its Golden Brick model covers the same range in 4 minutes and 22 seconds. CATL’s earlier commercial battery, rated at 8C, goes from 20 to 80 percent in 6 minutes and 48 seconds.

FAW Group has also announced a battery that charges from 10 to 70 percent in 3 minutes and 41 seconds, a few seconds ahead of CATL’s new pack on a comparable charge window.

The source notes that EV charging times are now being compared in seconds rather than minutes.
