Former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn displayed a series of severe physical tics and broke down weeping during his murder trial in Troy, Ohio, on Monday as prosecutors presented photographic evidence of his slain wife.
Flynn, 40, who now works as a pastor, is on trial for the murder of his wife Ashley Flynn, 37, a schoolteacher who was shot dead with a 9mm handgun in February at their home in Tipp City, Ohio. He has pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The couple's two young daughters were asleep in their bunk beds at the home when the shooting took place. Prosecutors presented evidence from the crime scene on Monday morning while Flynn sat at the defense table.
Tipp City is a municipality located in Miami County, Ohio, situated north of Dayton. The criminal trial is being heard in the Miami County seat of Troy under presiding Judge Jeannine Pratt.
During Monday's proceedings, Flynn tensed his neck so tightly that veins bulged from his skin as Ohio Bureau of Investigation detective David Hammond walked jurors through a photo of a bloody nightstand.

Courtroom Physical Reactions and Evidence
As jurors prepared to view a gruesome photograph showing serious head injuries sustained by Ashley, Flynn looked directly toward Judge Pratt while his shirt collar moved up and down as he jerked forward. His neck and ears turned bright red before he lowered his head, swallowed repeatedly, and frantically wiped tears from his face with tissues.
Prosecution witnesses focused on dismantling Flynn's claim that an intruder committed the killing. Investigators have never located an intruder in connection with the case.
Detective Hammond told the court that while the handle on the couple's garage door was broken off, there was no evidence that anyone had tried to pry it open. Hammond stated both locks were unlocked, no damage was found, and he could not find any evidence a pry tool was inserted to open it.
Flynn shifted uncomfortably, looked from side to side, and scratched his ear during Hammond's testimony. He displayed a flash of temper and shook his head side to side when the detective told the court, "It didn't look right to me."
Flynn rolled his shoulders as prosecutors highlighted evidence concerning a handgun safe inside his vehicle. Prosecutors alleged that the firearm Flynn typically stored inside his vehicle safe was missing following the shooting, showing jurors a photo of the empty safe alongside evidence of a bullet that traveled through Ashley's head into her elbow.
The trial was also marked by a disruption when a female member of the public was ejected from the courtroom after attempting to subtly give the finger to a sheriff's deputy. The motive behind the incident was not made clear in court.
Extramarital Affair and Text Messages
The courtroom distress followed testimony delivered last week revealing that Flynn had cheated on Ashley with an unidentified mistress during a yearslong affair, sending her more than 100,000 text messages.
Prosecutor Paul M. Watkins read messages to the court in which Flynn expressed a desire to kill his wife. In one message, Flynn wrote: "If I could literally kill her and not go to hell I would in a heartbeat. That is how dark and hateful I feel."
Prosecutor Watkins read another text in which Flynn told his mistress: "I was up until 4AM last night crying. Literally thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail."
Defense attorney Emily Smith told the court that Flynn acknowledges the affair and described the messages as hurtful and selfish. Smith argued that the texts were written solely to appease his mistress and do not offer proof beyond reasonable doubt that Flynn killed Ashley.

Flynn previously appeared as a contestant on the reality singing competition American Idol during its 2013 season. He successfully passed his initial audition and reached the show's Hollywood rounds before being eliminated from the competition, later becoming a church pastor.
