French news channel BFMTV was forced to interrupt its live transmission of a 2027 presidential debate on Thursday after its audio feed was cut.
The French employers federation Medef requested the audio shutoff because it had granted exclusive live broadcast rights for the debate to rival news network LCI.
Seven leading candidates for the 2027 French presidential election were taking part in the discussion when BFMTV ceased its broadcast. In a public statement, BFMTV said it regretted being unable to broadcast the political debate organized by Medef to its conclusion, adding that viewers had been deprived of a major political event.
The network stated that the transmission had to be interrupted when the audio signal made available to BFMTV was cut off. BFMTV explained that, unlike the previous year, the signal provided by Medef was not freely accessible to all media outlets due to the agreement with LCI.
Exclusive Broadcast Rights Agreement
Medef confirmed to Agence France-Presse that it decided together with LCI to cut the audio signal to prevent an unauthorized broadcast. A spokesperson for Medef explained that the organisation had reached an agreement with LCI for the live broadcast of the debate, which was hosted by an LCI journalist.
The spokesperson added that Medef had made a similar arrangement the previous year with BFMTV for a debate featuring political party leaders. Under the current agreement, only LCI held the right to broadcast the event live, while other media outlets were permitted to film and use footage after the debate concluded.
Dispute Over Camera Setup and Signal Access
BFMTV stated that it had installed its camera equipment inside the venue in full transparency with the organizer. The network intended to broadcast excerpts of the debate on Thursday alongside live studio discussions and analysis.
