Audrey, a former champion on the French television quiz show "N'oubliez pas les paroles," and Cynthia, a winning contestant on "Koh-Lanta," are longtime friends from Castres in the Tarn region of southern France. Both appeared on national television around the same time, and months after their episodes aired, they are speaking about what happened once the cameras stopped rolling.
The two women said they still talk often about their television experiences. They said television is a particular world, and that knowing someone else who has lived through it makes it easier to share what they felt. They said there are things only someone who has been through it can understand.
Two very different television journeys
Audrey said she came to "N'oubliez pas les paroles" almost by accident, after a friend bet her that she would not be capable of taking part. She said she responded by taking on the challenge to prove she could do it. Months later, she went on to win repeatedly on France 2.
Cynthia chose a more extreme test on "Koh-Lanta," spending 40 days facing physical trials, hunger and isolation. She said she wanted to take on the challenge above all to get to know herself better.
The two friends closely followed each other's progress on screen. Audrey said Cynthia impressed her and that she was proud of her for representing the colors of the Tarn. Cynthia said she started watching Nagui's game show specifically to follow her friend, recalling that the more levels Audrey climbed, the more she and others wondered when she would be stopped, calling it crazy.
Returning to reality after the cameras stopped
For Audrey, used to filming concentrated over just a few days, the return to normal life was relatively smooth. For Cynthia, who had lived cut off from the world for more than a month, the transition was much harder.
Cynthia said the hardest part was turning her phone back on, explaining that the mental load of daily life had completely disappeared while she was away and then was handed back to her all at once. The return was made harder still by the fact that she had to keep her result secret before the episode aired.
What they discovered about themselves
Beyond the public attention, both women said the experience left a deeper mark. Audrey said she discovered a competitive streak she did not know she had, adding that people around her had pointed it out and that she had come to recognize it in herself.
Cynthia said she realized she was mentally stronger than she had believed. She said everything is decided in the mind, and that she now knows that if she truly wants something, she can achieve it.
Would they do it again?
Asked whether they were ready to take part in another television show, Audrey said she would rather stay focused on her musical path for now. Cynthia left the door open, saying that if another opportunity came up on "Koh-Lanta," she would go straight back, a statement she found amusing given that she had sworn on the island she would never return.
Summing up their experiences, Cynthia spoke of pride and of winning, while Audrey said, smiling, that they had both won. Beyond the on-screen victory, the two friends said the experience left them with new confidence, lasting memories and a stronger friendship.
