President of the Republic António José Seguro called on Thursday for continuity in public policies regardless of government changes, arguing that stability brings clear advantages to Portugal.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 634th edition of the Feira de São Mateus in Viseu, Seguro pointed to the tourism sector as a successful example of political continuity that other government areas should follow.
Seguro noted that while governments and government members in tourism change over time, a steady sequence has been maintained. He argued that there is a need for stable public policies and emphasized that there is only one country, making stability essential for national success.
The head of state praised the work of Secretary of State for Tourism Pedro Machado. Seguro described tourism as a strategic sector for the country, highlighting its role in attracting roughly 30 million foreign visitors every year.
Tourism sector and regional development
According to Seguro, tourism has built capacity across Portugal by boosting national heritage and supporting Portuguese businesses across all regions. He stressed that no region is dispensable, noting that even the smallest communities with few residents make an essential contribution, particularly as modern tourism requires differentiation.
During the event, Mayor of Viseu João Azevedo presented Seguro with the key to the city. Seguro called the gesture deeply emotional, noting it was the first city key he had received in Portugal.
Fair expansion and international strategy
Azevedo stated that the centuries-old Feira de São Mateus, which runs until September 6, is currently in a transition phase. He expressed confidence that the fair will achieve new performance ratios and targets in the coming years.
To reach those goals, Azevedo announced plans to strengthen the fair's international dimension by attracting more foreign tourists and members of the global Portuguese diaspora. He affirmed that working together will make the fair stronger.
Illegal immigration and National Health Service policies
In related national developments, Seguro expressed deep regret over a recent tragedy in Ceuta. He called for a firm hand in the fight against illegal immigration.
The president also promulgated legislation creating the career of dentist within the National Health Service (SNS). In addition, Seguro expressed profound sadness following the deaths of two Portuguese women in an accident in Formentera.
