A 50-year-old foreign citizen, Aleksandr Sushkov, has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for smuggling 70 kilograms of drugs from Spain into Russia.
The Leningrad Regional Court delivered the sentence following a trial in which a jury returned a guilty verdict and determined that Sushkov did not deserve leniency, the press service of the Leningrad Oblast courts said.
He will serve his sentence in a strict-regime penal colony, according to the regional prosecutor's office. Strict-regime facilities in the Russian correctional system operate under high security with tight movement controls, typically reserved for individuals convicted of serious crimes or serving long sentences.
The court established that Sushkov received the 70-kilogram shipment of illegal drugs in March 2023 with the intention of distributing the narcotics across Russian territory.
Investigators also charged Sushkov after discovering that he had found and illegally taken possession of a firearm along with 34 rounds of ammunition. Court officials noted that Sushkov admitted guilt only to the firearm charge, while denying involvement in the drug smuggling operation.

Russian authorities previously reported the arrest of a 23-year-old citizen of Kazakhstan in Saratov Oblast who allegedly arrived from Thailand carrying a suitcase filled with drugs.
