Air pollution creates extra heart stress within hours of exposure, researchers reported in a study published in BMC Public Health.

The investigators analyzed data from 27 previously published studies examining the impact of air pollution on heart rate variability. Heart rate variability measures the changes in time intervals between consecutive heartbeats, serving as a vital metric for cardiovascular function.
Physicians use heart rate variability to evaluate how the autonomic nervous system is functioning and how the body responds to physiological stress. The autonomic nervous system regulates involuntary bodily functions, balancing heart rate and blood pressure control without conscious input.
In healthy individuals, heart rate variability demonstrates physical adaptability. The sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system accelerates heart rate during stress, while the parasympathetic branch slows it down during rest and recovery.
The systematic review revealed that heart rate variability began showing a small but statistically significant decline after approximately three hours of exposure to even relatively low levels of air pollution.
Researchers suggested that the human body can temporarily compensate for the impact of polluted air. However, after that initial period, the burden on the nervous system and the mechanisms regulating cardiac function starts to increase.
Impact on heart health
A reduction in heart rate variability has previously been connected to a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases and related complications. Cardiovascular conditions remain among the most widespread health issues globally, affecting heart muscle function and arterial health.
The study authors noted that these findings are particularly important for people who spend extended periods outdoors, as well as for patients with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions. They emphasized that while the observed changes in heart rate variability indicate physiological stress, they do not by themselves mean that heart disease has developed.
Air pollution typically contains airborne particles and chemical compounds emitted by motor vehicles, industrial plants, and urban infrastructure. When inhaled, these fine contaminants can enter the respiratory tract and interact with the circulatory system, triggering rapid biological responses.
