Inhaling the aroma of coffee for five minutes improves human mood and promotes a more relaxed brain state, according to a study published in Nutrients.

Researchers evaluated psychological and physiological responses in young adults exposed to the smell of the popular beverage, recording significant decreases in negative mood scores alongside changes in brain electrical activity.

The experiment involved 20 healthy volunteers between the ages of 20 and 29. During the testing process, participants spent five minutes inhaling coffee aroma while scientists recorded their physiological and psychological responses both before and after the exposure.

To measure the full impact of the scent, the research team conducted standardized mood evaluations and monitored electrical brain activity using electroencephalography. They also tracked autonomic stress responses by measuring participant heart rate and heart rate variability.

Psychological and physiological findings

Following the five-minute scent exposure, participants demonstrated noticeable improvements across multiple mood metrics. Scientists observed marked reductions in feelings of fatigue, anxiety, tension, confusion, and dejection among the volunteers.

Data collected from the electroencephalography recordings showed a simultaneous increase in the brain wave index linked to relaxation. However, researchers found no significant changes in heart rate or heart rate variability during or after the scent test.

Electroencephalography, commonly known as EEG, is a non-invasive neurological monitoring method that records electrical signals produced by brain neurons using electrodes attached to the scalp. In neuroscience research, specific patterns in brain wave activity provide objective indicators of mental alertness, stress levels, and emotional relaxation states.

Heart rate variability reflects the tiny variation in time intervals between consecutive heartbeats. Regulated by the autonomic nervous system, it serves as a critical biological measure for evaluating stress levels, emotional stability, and cardiovascular health.

Understanding aroma and brain pathways

Olfactory stimulation occurs when volatile aromatic molecules released by substances like coffee enter the nasal passage and interact with sensory receptors. These olfactory nerves send direct signals to the limbic system, the region of the brain responsible for regulating emotions, mood, and memory formation.

Because olfactory nerve pathways bypass the brain's main sensory relay stations, pleasant aromas can trigger rapid psychological and neural shifts even before any chemical compounds are ingested into the bloodstream.

Based on their findings, the study authors concluded that even short-term exposure to the smell of coffee can lead to improved emotional states and measurable changes in brain activity.

Nutrients is an international, peer-reviewed open-access journal that publishes scientific research across clinical nutrition, dietetics, and biological responses to food components. The researchers noted that while their investigation focused on sensory aroma exposure, previous scientific research has shown that caffeine consumption in most cases does not increase the risk of heart problems in healthy individuals.
