Windows PC users given four key tips to prevent slowdowns

Technology publication XDA has issued four essential recommendations for Microsoft Windows computer owners to prevent system performance slowdowns and free up memory.

The media outlet advised personal computer owners to configure their operating system immediately after installation by removing unused programs and clearing the startup queue of rarely used applications. According to the report, programs in the startup list launch automatically every time the operating system boots up. This process consumes random access memory, reducing available system resources for other active tasks.

Random access memory, or RAM, serves as the high-speed short-term memory that computers use to run active software. When background applications clog this memory space, overall system performance decreases.

The tech specialists also warned against using third-party utility software that promises to clean junk files from disk storage or organize the Windows registry. The authors explained that external utilities cannot possess such extended functionality within the operating system. Windows is developed by Microsoft and includes built-in maintenance tools designed to manage system files safely.

System shutdowns and storage maintenance

In addition, the publication emphasized the importance of shutting down personal computers regularly rather than relying on sleep mode. When a computer is powered off completely, Windows terminates all active processes, allowing the machine to start fresh on its next boot.

Sleep mode keeps system data stored in temporary memory so the computer can wake up quickly. However, leaving a computer in sleep mode for extended periods allows background processes and memory leaks to accumulate, which eventually degrades operating speed.

For solid-state drive storage, XDA recommended running routine diagnostics and maintaining at least 10 to 15 percent of free disk space. The authors explained that keeping this space clear prevents both the storage drive and the computer itself from slowing down over time.

Solid-state drives, or SSDs, rely on flash memory technology to store files. Unlike traditional mechanical hard drives, SSDs require empty blocks of storage capacity to write data efficiently and manage background operations.

Common factors slowing system speed

The advice follows a previous report by technology publication BGR, which identified ten popular reasons for Windows system slowdowns.

In that report, BGR identified selecting sleep mode instead of performing a full shutdown as a primary cause of performance degradation. The publication also listed enabling power saving mode among the main factors that restrict computer processing speed.
