A wildfire on the Greek island of Kefalonia prompted authorities to issue five successive emergency alerts through the 112 system, ordering evacuations across multiple communities.
The fire broke out at 11:20 p.m. on Saturday in forested terrain in the Pastra area, according to the Fire Service. The site is described as difficult to access, though the nearby settlement was not immediately threatened.
Residents of Kato Kateleios were told to move immediately toward Ratzakli and Skala. Earlier alerts ordered evacuations from Kremmydi, Markopoulo, and Kateleios, with those residents directed toward Argostoli. An initial alert for Pastra told residents to remain on standby and follow instructions from authorities.
The fifth consecutive 112 alert instructed anyone in Kato Kateleios to leave in the direction of Ratzakli and Skala, following the guidance of authorities.
The Fire Service deployed 31 firefighters, two foot-patrol units from the 16th EMODE, and seven fire engines to combat the blaze. Water tankers and construction equipment from local municipal authorities were also brought in to support the operation.
