The Portuguese feature film O Dia Mais Feliz da Minha Vida, directed by Vicente Alves do Ó, will make its American premiere on Sunday at the 28th Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham, Alabama.
Production company Ukbar Filmes announced on Friday that the independent movie is scheduled to screen at 2:30 p.m. at the Carver Theatre. The screening represents the film's first presentation to a North American audience and marks the start of its international festival run ahead of a planned release in Portuguese cinemas in 2027.
The Sidewalk Film Festival, held annually in downtown Birmingham, is a week-long celebration of independent cinema running from August 24 to August 30. The festival's screening venue, the Carver Theatre, is a historic auditorium located in Birmingham's 4th Avenue district.
Independent Premiere in Alabama
Set in 1982, the 79-minute drama centers on Vasco, a ten-year-old boy living with his mother in a small Portuguese town. While discovering the world around him through books, movies, and a fascination with the 1970s British science-fiction television series Space: 1999, Vasco struggles to understand the absence of his father and navigate the complexities of adulthood.
According to the production company statement, festival organizers characterized the film as a story where the vibrant, prismatic colors of 1982 Portugal contrast with the emotional tensions of Vasco's life as he moves between childhood wonder and adult reality.
Director Insights and Production Details
In a statement released by the producer, director and screenwriter Vicente Alves do Ó described the project as a deeply personal exploration of childhood memories and the transitional moment when children realize the adult world is far more complex than it appears. Alves do Ó added that launching the film's international circuit in the United States through an independent film festival was particularly meaningful.
Alves do Ó also authored the screenplay for the 79-minute work. The film stars child actor Kévin Vicente as Vasco, alongside a Portuguese ensemble cast featuring Rita Loureiro, Ana Bola, Rafael Morais, Miguel Damião, Rita Lello, Ricardo Barbosa, Rute Miranda, Duarte Grilo, Inês Sá Frias, Ana Vilela da Costa, and Valerie Braddell.
Produced by Lisbon-based production outfit Ukbar Filmes, the feature received official backing from the Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual, Portugal's national film agency, alongside state broadcaster Rádio e Televisão de Portugal. Commercial distribution in Portugal is scheduled for 2027 under Portuguese distributor Cinemundo.
