Spanish investigators are probing whether a powerful hot tub suction system killed holidaying couple Patrick and Thomasina Tobin at a villa near Valencia.
Thomasina Tobin, 51, a London-based mother originally from County Monaghan in Ireland, and her husband Patrick Tobin, 48, who was originally from New Zealand, were discovered dead by their teenage children after failing to return from using the property's jacuzzi.
The family was staying at the Colina del Sol complex in Cullera, a coastal resort town situated approximately 40 kilometres south of Valencia along the Mediterranean coast of eastern Spain.
Spanish authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of death, and comprehensive toxicology tests remain ongoing. Postmortem examinations conducted on both bodies have ruled out foul play, while local police detected no signs of forced entry or suspicious activity on nearby security camera footage.

Investigation into the villa tragedy
Spanish police noted a strong chemical smell at the scene, while marks and scratches were found on both bodies alongside blood in the cloudy water of the hot tub.
Local newspapers reported that suction marks were found on both victims, but were noticeably more pronounced on Mr Tobin. Detectives believe Mr Tobin was pulled underwater first by the circulating hydraulic system and that Mrs Tobin passed away while attempting to rescue him.
Reporting on the preliminary findings, Valencia newspaper Las Provincias stated: "According to initial investigations, the excessive suction force would have imprisoned the couple inside the bathtub, which triggered a situation of extreme anguish and desperate physical effort to free themselves from the hydraulic grip."
The newspaper added: "The autopsy findings almost definitively reinforce the theory of accidental entrapment. Preliminary analyses indicate that the victims suffered cardiac arrest brought on by acute stress following physical exhaustion and the desperation of the moment."

Expert doubts and chemical risks
Despite widespread local speculation surrounding hydraulic entrapment, aquatic safety experts have questioned whether suction was truly responsible for the deaths of the couple.
Matt Reynolds, a forensic engineer and aquatic safety expert who investigates swimming pool and hot tub accidents, told the Daily Mail that the evidence does not match typical entrapment incidents.
"The fact pattern doesn't fit with what you would typically see in an entrapment-type incident," Reynolds said.
Reynolds explained that suction drains in hot tubs are typically positioned at the bottom of the spa pool, which measures between 3.5 and 4 feet in depth, or on the vertical face of the seating area around calf height. He noted that it would be highly unusual for an adult to make a torso seal in those locations.
Pointing to police reports of a strong odour near the tub, Reynolds raised the possibility of chemical contamination, adding: "You wonder whether there was a chemical exposure incident."

Mechanisms of hot tub suction entrapment
Suction entrapment is a hazardous phenomenon that occurs when a bather blocks the powerful drain or suction outlet feeding water into a hot tub or swimming pool's filtration pump and hydrotherapy jets.
The resulting vacuum and hydraulic pressure can be so powerful that victims become pinned underwater and are unable to free themselves. In several documented cases, multiple adults have struggled to pull trapped bathers to safety.
Reynolds outlined the three distinct categories of suction entrapment that occur in swimming pools and hot tubs: hair entanglement, body entrapment, and finger entrapment.
"One would be hair entanglement, where typically its teenage or adult females who have long hair and it gets stuck in the drain and causes someone to be submerged underwater," Reynolds said.
Explaining the second type, he said: "Another would be body entrapment. When that happens you make a seal, typically with the torso area, over the suction outlet. Typically, that can't be broken without turning the pump off."
The third form, finger entrapment, occurs when a bather's finger slips into a small hole or damaged drain cover and becomes stuck due to friction and vacuum pressure.
Previous cases and safety regulations
Because of significant differences in body size and physical strength, suction entrapment is substantially more common in children than in adults.
In 2021, father Alex Williams from Shrewsbury, a historic town in Shropshire, England, issued a dire warning to parents after his young son Harry was pulled underwater by a hot tub filter outlet.
Harry was dragged beneath the surface and lost consciousness. It took the combined strength of three men to release him from the suction outlet and pull him to the surface, where family members performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to restore his breathing.

In another severe case in 2017, a 14-year-old boy suffered devastating internal injuries when his intestines were sucked out by a swimming pool filter at a leisure centre in Spain.
The issue gained international attention in 2002 following the death of seven-year-old Virginia Graeme Baker, who became trapped by a drain in a spa hot tub in Fairfax County, Virginia, in the United States. Adults attempting to save her could not pull her free until the drain cover broke.
Her grandfather, James Baker, who served as US Secretary of State under President George H. W. Bush, campaigned alongside her family for comprehensive safety reforms.
Their campaign led to the introduction of sweeping safety legislation requiring anti-entrapment devices across pools and spas in the United States. However, similar safety requirements have not been adopted universally, and regulatory standards vary significantly between different countries.
Safety campaigners advise bathers never to sit directly on drain outlets or use spas where drain covers appear damaged or missing. Modern pools and spas can incorporate protective features, including compliant drain covers, multiple suction outlets, and automated systems designed to limit or release dangerous vacuum pressure.
