Rheumatoid arthritis medication upadacitinib helped restore scalp hair in more than half of patients suffering from severe alopecia areata in two major clinical trials published in JAMA Dermatology.
The trials evaluated 1,399 adults and teenagers who had lost at least 50 percent of their scalp hair. After 24 weeks of daily treatment, more than 54 percent of participants taking a 30-milligram dose regrew hair covering at least 80 percent of their scalp.
Among patients receiving a lower daily dose of 15 milligrams, nearly half achieved the same 80 percent hair coverage after 24 weeks. By contrast, only about two percent of participants in the placebo group experienced equivalent hair regrowth.
For many participants, the treatment yielded even more dramatic results. Hair returned almost completely in more than a third of patients, while some individuals also saw regrowth of their eyebrows and eyelashes. Initial noticeable changes began appearing after roughly eight weeks of daily therapy.

Understanding alopecia areata and upadacitinib
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy hair follicles, disrupting the normal hair growth cycle and leading to hair loss in patches or across the entire body. Upadacitinib belongs to a class of targeted drugs known as Janus kinase inhibitors, which suppress key immune signaling pathways responsible for driving cellular inflammation.
Because upadacitinib interrupts the specific chemical signals that maintain inflammation around hair follicles, the medication, originally created to treat autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, proved effective at reversing hair loss. During the 24-week trials, the most common side effects reported were acne, cold symptoms, and throat irritation, while serious adverse events were rare.
Clinical outlook for hair loss treatments
The study authors noted that upadacitinib could emerge as an important new treatment option for adolescents and adults dealing with severe alopecia areata. Severe hair loss can cause profound psychological and emotional stress, yet effective treatments capable of restoring substantial hair growth have historically been limited.
The newly published trial results follow prior scientific research demonstrating that the artificial sweetener stevioside can boost the effectiveness of medications designed to treat baldness.
