Frequent consumption of ultra-processed foods is linked to worsening sperm quality and a lower likelihood of conception, according to a scientific review published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition.
The study author analyzed existing research on how industrial food products affect male reproductive health. Researchers evaluated key indicators of male fertility, including sperm quality, hormone levels, and the overall capacity to conceive.

Ultra-processed foods encompass a wide range of commercially prepared items, including fast food, sugary soft drinks, packaged snacks, ready-to-eat meals, and other manufactured food products containing numerous artificial additives. In food science, ultra-processed items are defined as industrial formulations made mostly or entirely from substances extracted from foods, along with additives intended to enhance flavor, texture, and shelf life.
Impact on sperm motility and count
The review established that the most pronounced associations involved sperm count and sperm motility. In one study examined by the author, men who consumed the highest amounts of ultra-processed food were 53 percent more likely to exhibit reduced sperm motility compared to those with lower consumption levels.
A separate study reviewed in the paper found that high consumption of ultra-processed food was linked to a lower probability of achieving conception and a greater risk of fertility difficulties. In reproductive medicine, sperm count measures the concentration of sperm present in a sample, while sperm motility refers to the ability of sperm to move efficiently through the female reproductive tract toward an egg.
Observational limitations and lifestyle factors
Despite these findings, scientists emphasized that current evidence does not prove that ultra-processed foods directly cause male infertility. Most of the underlying studies were observational in nature, meaning researchers observed population data and dietary patterns rather than conducting controlled laboratory trials.
The authors noted that the results could have been influenced by broader dietary habits, body mass, smoking, alcohol intake, and other lifestyle factors. In epidemiological research, observational studies can identify statistical correlations between diet and health outcomes, but controlled clinical studies are required to confirm direct cause and effect.
Environmental influences on reproductive health
The findings add to a growing body of scientific inquiry into environmental and dietary factors affecting male reproductive health. Previous research has similarly demonstrated that exposure to polluted air can negatively affect male fertility parameters.
