The Ukrainian armed forces could significantly cut their reliance on foreign military hardware by deploying a domestically designed bomb conversion module known as the Equalizer, according to a report by American defense publication TWZ.
The Universal Glide and Correction Module was developed by Ukrainian defense firm DG Industry with assistance from Brave1, a state-sponsored defense technology incubator. The system converts standard unguided free-fall aerial bombs into precision-guided standoff weapons.
Unlike comparable Russian UMPK units or American Joint Direct Attack Munition guidance kits, the Ukrainian design operates without an auxiliary propulsion motor. The manufacturer relied on an optimized aerodynamic structure and a high-precision guidance unit to steer unpowered bombs toward designated targets.
Brave1 representative Yuriy Voronkov explained that local engineers designed almost the entire system inside Ukraine, including the flight controller software and the wing assemblies, while relying on foreign suppliers only for specialized microchips and semiconductors. Voronkov noted that roughly 90 percent of the overall component base consists of parts produced in Ukraine, Europe, and the United States, which helped the company eliminate critical vulnerabilities to external supply disruptions.
Development timeline and defense exhibitions
The development represents part of a broader effort by Ukraine to establish domestic production of standoff munitions. In May, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense announced that a domestic aerial bomb, built as an equivalent to Russian UMPK glide munitions, had completed testing and was ready for operational combat deployment.
Evidence of Ukraine's work on glide bomb technology surfaced at international defense trade shows earlier in the summer. In June, the Telegram military tracking channel Voenniy Osvedomitel reported that Ukrainian defense entities exhibited a specialized kit for converting free-fall bombs into guided glide weapons during the Eurosatory defense exhibition in France.
Strategic role of glide bomb technology
Glide bomb conversion modules have transformed modern air warfare by turning conventional iron bombs into long-range precision strikes at a fraction of the cost of cruise or ballistic missiles. By attaching pop-out wings and satellite or inertial guidance systems to unguided munitions, air forces can launch attacks from high altitudes dozens of kilometers away from target areas.
This standoff distance allows tactical aircraft to strike hardened positions and logistics hubs while remaining outside the engagement envelope of short-range and medium-range ground-based air defense systems. Ukrainian defense platform Brave1 was established by the government to accelerate such technological solutions by pairing private defense technology startups with military funding and testing facilities.
