Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers has allocated 33.6 billion hryvnias for payments to military personnel and their families, Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi announced on the evening of September 4.
Koretskyi said the money was being redistributed from the reserve set aside for the security and defense sector, in order to ensure the necessary payments are made on time in September.
He said payments to Ukraine's defenders and support for their families, along with equipping the Defense Forces with the weapons and equipment they need, remained an unconditional priority for the state.
How the money is split
According to Koretskyi, 25.9 billion hryvnias of the total will go toward the monthly cash allowance paid to Armed Forces of Ukraine servicemen. A further 7.7 billion hryvnias will be set aside for one-off payments made in the event of a serviceman's death, disability, or partial loss of working capacity.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine have been fighting Russia's full-scale invasion since February 2022, and monthly cash allowances along with death and disability payments form a core part of the state's financial commitments to service members and their families.
Call for international aid
Koretskyi also urged government officials and members of parliament to speed up as much as possible the decisions needed to secure international financial aid. He said this was the only way to balance the budget under current conditions.
The appeal comes as Ukraine's public finances remain under heavy strain from the ongoing war, with the state budget dependent on both domestic reallocation and foreign assistance to meet its obligations.
Earlier budget moves
On September 1, Koretskyi said the Cabinet of Ministers had identified 70 billion hryvnias in non-obligatory spending that would be redirected toward defense needs.
That same day, Roksolana Pidlasa, chair of the parliament's budget committee, warned that Ukraine would soon have to resort to cutting budget expenditures.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has said it is up to the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, whether the country receives $15 billion in international financial aid.
