Britain's media regulator Ofcom has revealed why a report of King Charles III's death aired on Radio Caroline. An employee of the station played a recording prepared for the monarch's death out of curiosity, then left his workstation.
Ofcom said that on May 19, the journalist played the pre-recorded announcement without realizing it had gone live on air. The national anthem was followed by 16 minutes of silence.
Regulator's findings
Radio Caroline issued a correction only half an hour later. Ofcom ruled that the station had breached two provisions of the broadcasting code, and the employee responsible received a reprimand.
Earlier, Britain opened an investigation into 23 police officers accused of sleeping on duty and leaving their posts for personal errands while guarding King Charles III's residences.
