UK Plans to Mobilise 95,000 Veterans Over Russia Threat

The UK government plans to recall 95,000 military veterans up to age 65 for war games as military chiefs warn of a potential conflict with Russia by 2030.

UK Plans to Mobilise 95,000 Veterans Over Russia Threat

The UK Government is planning to mobilise 95,000 military veterans to counter the threat from Russia after regular Army numbers fell to historic lows.

The recall strategy aims to draft retired servicemen and women aged up to 65 into mandatory war games and military training exercises. Military chiefs have warned that the United Kingdom could face direct military conflict with Russia by 2030 if defense readiness is not restored.

Addressing the House of Commons this week, the Prime Minister acknowledged that national security "can’t come at the expense of social security." The Prime Minister refused to commit to allocating three per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) to defense by the end of the decade, even as the regular Army has shrunk to its smallest size since the Napoleonic Wars.

Under current regulations, the Ministry of Defence is required to maintain contact with former soldiers, sailors, and airmen for six years following their departure from full-time service. However, Lord George Robertson, the former Labour Defence Secretary and NATO Secretary General who is directing the government's long-delayed strategic defence review, admitted that officials have "lost track of veterans on the recall list."

Lord Robertson stated that the Government's primary plan is to "round up those who are available and fit and willing" to join the exercises. At the same time, ministers are reducing the minimum number of tax-free paid training days for reservists in a cost-cutting measure.

Veteran Grievances and Public Spending Priorities

Writing in World Stock Market, columnist Richard Littlejohn criticized the Government for prioritizing welfare spending over military readiness, quipping that Russian President Vladimir Putin "must be shaking in his Gucci loafers." Littlejohn argued that ministers are allocating funds to social security and benefit payments rather than recruiting regular soldiers and providing proper equipment.

Littlejohn also referenced the administration's pledge to clear rough sleepers from city streets by Christmas. Noting that many homeless individuals are former soldiers who fell on hard times, he suggested mockingly that ministers might plan to sweep them up directly back into military uniform.

The mobilization initiative faces further resistance over legal actions against former service personnel. Many veterans remain angered by ongoing prosecutions for alleged war crimes committed during past operations, particularly during service in Northern Ireland.

Writing in The Daily Telegraph this week, reservist Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon warned that former personnel will not return if legal pressure continues. He stated that veterans will not "tolerate the continuing culture of legal and bureaucratic harassment that has become such a corrosive issue for many who served this country," adding: "If you want us back, treat us with respect."

Littlejohn warned that without policy changes, the defense of the realm in a future global conflict could depend on a volunteer force reminiscent of 1940. To illustrate his point, he presented a satirical scene set within the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard, the fictional platoon from the classic British television sitcom Dad's Army.

Satirical Portrayal of Home Guard Mobilisation

The satirical script opens with Captain Mainwaring ordering Sergeant Wilson to fall in the platoon after learning of a Prime Minister announcement on TikTok that Britain is at war with Russia. Wilson reports that Corporal Jones is absent after being forced to sell his butcher shop to a halal butcher.

When Corporal Jones arrives shouting "The Russians are coming, Mr Mainwaring! The Russians are coming! Don’t panic!", Wilson informs him that the people arriving on the beach near the winter gardens are not Russian invaders. Instead, they are illegal immigrants being brought ashore by the Border Force and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

Mainwaring warns of an incoming air attack by unmanned drones reported by Warden Hodges, but notes that RAF Walmington cannot launch interceptors because the airbase was converted into a shelter for 1,500 undocumented migrants. He describes the migrants gathering near a local vape shop on the site of a former bank while smoking, drinking, and wolf-whistling at Mrs Fox and Mrs Pike, leading Private Frazer to declare: "We’re doomed. We’re all doomed!"

When Mainwaring suggests shooting down the drones, Wilson points out that private firearms have been confiscated and that the government is attempting to ban gamekeepers from shooting pheasants. Private Walker offers to supply a hidden consignment of sawn-off Purdey shotguns, prompting Private Pike to ask for two weapons like Vinnie Jones in the film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, which he saw at the Ritzy cinema before its conversion into a mosque. Mainwaring dismisses him as a "Stupid boy."

Corporal Jones suggests attaching butcher knives to broom handles, shouting "They don’t like it up ’em." Wilson asks about military rifles in storage, but Mainwaring explains that the Prime Minister would rather spend billions on social security than national security, leaving troops reduced to shouting "Bang-two-three" as recruits did in 1940.

The scene ends with Mainwaring receiving a TikTok alert that a Russian nuclear submarine has been spotted offshore. When Walker asks where the Royal Navy is, Mainwaring reveals that British aircraft carriers are stuck in dry dock while HMS Drag Queen has broken down in the Mediterranean, leaving the platoon with no option but to deploy pedal boats.
