Degree apprenticeships in Britain now pay graduates an average of £37,000 within a year of completion as young people seek alternatives to university debt.

According to the Education Policy Institute, top degree apprenticeship programmes have become more competitive than places at prestigious Russell Group universities as demand rises among middle-class families. Participants earn a fully funded degree alongside three to four years of structured on-the-job training and a regular salary.

Data shows that graduates from these alternative higher education schemes earn an average of £37,000 just one year after finishing, compared to £18,555 for those who complete traditional university degrees. The programmes span major industries including accounting, investment banking, pharmaceuticals, technology, engineering and public transport.

In many schemes, apprentices can gain a fully funded degree while learning on the job and getting paid a salary

Major corporate employers cover all tuition fees while placing apprentices directly into graduate-level positions, helping young workers avoid spiralling student loans and degree debt.

Accountancy degree apprenticeships and Big Four rankings

Many major accountancy companies are now investing in school-leaver schemes to develop talent from the ground up

Accountancy firms are expanding school-leaver schemes to train professionals directly from secondary education rather than relying solely on university graduates. Candidates work toward undergraduate or master's degrees while completing full-time employment and part-time study over three to four years.

Grant Thornton ranks seventh overall on the Department for Education top 100 apprenticeship employers list, making it the highest-ranked accounting firm. The company offers fully funded apprenticeship schemes lasting four to five years.

Among the Big Four accounting firms, EY ranks highest at 10th on the Department for Education list, followed by RSM UK at 11th, BDO at 14th and KPMG at 49th. Department rankings evaluate employer feedback, total intake numbers and participant achievement beyond the core training programme.

EY offers Level 7 apprenticeships in tax, assurance and consulting, which deliver qualifications equivalent to a master's degree over a four-year period. Apprentices receive guidance from career counsellors and coaches while gaining practical experience with local and international business clients.

Glassdoor data indicates that EY apprentices earn starting salaries around £20,465 per year, though EY does not publicly disclose exact remuneration. Applicants need 4 or C grades in GCSE English Language and mathematics alongside three A-levels or equivalent qualifications.

Training at EY uses a hybrid format combining online instruction, peer college classes, home self-study and formal examinations. Applications for the 2027 intake open in the autumn on the company website after 2026 intakes closed.

Graduates entering Big Four firms in London typically start on salaries between £28,000 and £35,000 per year. Senior accountants earn between £45,000 and £65,000, while managerial roles pay between £60,000 and £80,000.

Banking and financial services apprenticeship schemes

The apprenticeship courses are offered at a number of universities, depending on the type of course

Banking organisations deliver training options ranging from one to four years across areas such as finance, fraud prevention, data science, economic crime, technology engineering and commercial banking.

Santander provides courses from Level 1 foundation levels, which require no prior experience and equal five GCSE passes at grades D to G, up to Level 6 degree-equivalent programmes that require three A-levels.

Investment banks including American firm JP Morgan, German institution Deutsche Bank and Swiss group UBS run specialised corporate schemes. JP Morgan operates a four-year financial services apprenticeship in London, Bournemouth and Edinburgh within its compliance, technology, finance and investment operations divisions.

JP Morgan accepted more than 120 apprentices across its finance and technology schemes as of 2021. Glassdoor figures show starting apprentice salaries of £21,000 per year, leading to degrees awarded by the University of Exeter or Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.

Successful candidates at JP Morgan can transition into full-time investment banking analyst roles, where average salaries range from £52,000 to £80,000. Applications open in late September through the JP Morgan website, with candidate alerts available via newsletter.

Former degree apprentice Karen Capper joined AstraZeneca in 1990 and subsequently rose to become the company's senior director of microbiology science and technology. Applications for AstraZeneca's next annual intake open in the coming months following the closure of 2026 applications in February.

Engineering and public transport apprenticeships

Lower-level apprenticeships are often more accessible, whereas those at a higher level have stricter requirements

Engineering company Rolls-Royce runs four-year apprenticeship schemes in Bristol focused on civil aerospace and defence. The programmes pay £22,990 annually and lead to a BEng in Mechanical Engineering with Manufacturing or a BEng in Aerospace Engineering.

Rolls-Royce applicants need 112 UCAS points and three A-levels at grade C or above, including mathematics, science or engineering. Applications for the next intake open in late autumn on the company website.
