People under 30 who contracted COVID-19 had a lower risk of developing type 1 diabetes, researchers told the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.
The study found that a prior coronavirus infection was associated with an overall 16 percent reduction in the subsequent risk of type 1 diabetes among individuals under 30 years old.

Researchers analyzed national medical registries in Denmark to examine how past coronavirus infection was related to the later onset of type 1 diabetes. The study evaluated 2,115 individuals diagnosed with type 1 diabetes before age 30, comparing them against 10,575 control participants without the disease who were matched by age and sex.
Denmark operates comprehensive public healthcare registers that track medical diagnoses, hospital admissions, and prescription records across its entire population. These national database systems enable health researchers to conduct large-scale epidemiological studies and track medical outcomes over long durations.
Danish health registry findings
The reduction in diabetes risk varied based on the elapsed time since infection. The strongest association appeared between 31 and 180 days after a COVID-19 diagnosis, during which the risk of developing type 1 diabetes was 42 percent lower compared to people without a recorded infection.
The study also analyzed the impact of vaccination status on the study participants. Among unvaccinated participants, individuals who had contracted COVID-19 had a 24 percent lower risk of type 1 diabetes compared to unvaccinated people without a registered coronavirus infection.
Immune system response hypotheses
Scientists suggested that certain viral infections may temporarily activate biological mechanisms that suppress excessive immune system activity and autoimmune reactions. COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which triggers broad inflammatory and immune responses across multiple organ systems.
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Without functional beta cells, the body cannot produce insulin to regulate blood sugar, requiring lifelong daily insulin therapy and regular glucose monitoring. Unlike type 2 diabetes, which is commonly associated with metabolic lifestyle factors, type 1 diabetes usually presents in children and young adults.
Observational limits and related research
The researchers emphasized that the investigation was observational and does not prove that COVID-19 exerts a protective effect against type 1 diabetes. Observational studies can identify statistical links between medical events and health histories, but they cannot confirm direct causation without clinical trials.
The findings were presented at the annual congress of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, known as EASD. Founded in 1965, the organization brings together medical professionals and scientists from around the world to present peer-reviewed research on diabetes treatment and prevention.
