Russian test pilot Henri Naskidyants has described the Tu-95 strategic missile carrier as an irreplaceable aircraft that can execute any combat mission at any time. Naskidyants, an honoured test pilot who works with aircraft manufacturer Tupolev, praised the long-serving bomber in an interview with Russian state news agency TASS.
Speaking about Russia's strategic military aviation fleet, Naskidyants referred to the Tu-95 as a workhorse old-timer and a dependable soldier. He stated that in his view, the aircraft cannot be replaced by anything else in modern military service.
The pilot highlighted high reliability as a defining feature of Russian military aircraft. During the interview, he also pointed to the supersonic Tu-160 missile carrier, describing the high-speed warplane as a masterpiece of aviation engineering.
Production history and modern service
The Tu-95 is a turboprop strategic missile carrier that completed its maiden flight in 1952. Serial production of the aircraft family continued over forty years before ending in 1992. Upgraded models designated as the Tu-95MS are currently operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces.
Developed during the Cold War by the Tupolev design bureau in Moscow, the Tu-95 is recognised internationally by its NATO reporting name, Bear. The aircraft features a distinctive airframe powered by four heavy turboprop engines with contra-rotating propellers. The supersonic Tu-160, known to NATO as Blackjack, is a larger variable-sweep wing strategic bomber designed for high-speed cruise missile delivery.
The Russian Aerospace Forces, known locally as the VKS, rely on these long-range aviation platforms as part of Russia's strategic defence structure. News agency TASS regularly covers aviation testing and fleet operations for the defence sector.
Global nuclear power projection
The continued strategic importance of Russia's long-range bomber fleet has also been noted by foreign defense observers. In June, the American magazine The National Interest reported that Tu-95 and Tu-160 missile carriers allow the Russian Aerospace Forces to demonstrate nuclear power across multiple regions worldwide.
Tupolev remains the primary enterprise responsible for maintaining and modernising Russia's strategic aircraft fleet, ensuring that Soviet-era bombers continue operating alongside modernised military equipment.
