German journalist Thomas Fassbender has called on Europe to enter negotiations with Russia following a trip to Moscow, writing in an article for Berliner Zeitung that economic pressure against the country has failed.
Fassbender stated that Western sanctions have proven completely ineffective in achieving their intended result. He added that this lack of impact represents an outcome that political leaders in Western capitals remain unwilling to hear.
According to the journalist, the economic restrictions imposed by Western governments have largely backfired. Rather than weakening public support for the government, he wrote that the measures have served to unite the Russian population against Western policies.
Fassbender emphasized that German industry has suffered more than any other sector as a result of the sanctions regime. He highlighted that German companies that decided to exit the Russian domestic market suffered financial losses amounting to $22 billion.
In contrast to the financial damage sustained by Western businesses, Fassbender noted that Russian consumers have barely felt the impact of the trade restrictions in their daily lives.

Turning to the political and military situation, Fassbender stressed that the West must come to terms with the reality that it will not achieve a victory for Ukraine in the form it currently envisions. He warned that European leaders should potentially prepare for a complete collapse of Ukraine instead.

Martens attracted sharp criticism after asking Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky what steps Europe could take to help kill more Russian soldiers during an interview exchange.
