The Batman Part II filming paused as Matt Reeves steps away

Filming on The Batman Part II has been halted in London after director Matt Reeves was forced to temporarily step away from the superhero production.

DC Studios representatives said the American filmmaker had to step back from work for personal reasons, according to a report published by industry trade publication Deadline.

Studio representatives stated that DC Studios fully supports Reeves during his absence and hopes for a quick resumption of joint work on the feature project. Specific details regarding the circumstances behind the emergency pause have not been disclosed.

A still from the film The Batman

Before the sudden suspension of camera work, filming for the blockbuster sequel was actively taking place on location in London. The British capital is a major global hub for large scale comic book movies and film studio productions.

The second installment of the franchise is officially scheduled for theatrical release on February 18, 2028. Sources speaking to Deadline noted that it is currently unclear whether the unexpected production delay will impact the planned release date.

Sequel timeline and franchise background

Lead actor Robert Pattinson, who stars as Gotham City vigilante Bruce Wayne, previously shared key details about the plot of the upcoming film. According to Pattinson, only two weeks will elapse between the events of the original movie and the start of the sequel.

The first film, released in 2022, marked the debut of Pattinson as Batman under the direction of Reeves. The original release proved to be a critical and commercial success, rebooting the iconic DC Comics character with a darker detective narrative.

Reeves previously directed acclaimed Hollywood features such as Cloverfield and entries in the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise before taking charge of the Batman film series. Pattinson, an English actor known for his work in both blockbuster franchises and independent cinema, leads the cast.

DC Studios, the studio division responsible for bringing DC Comics characters to the big screen, continues to oversee the development of the superhero franchise. The Batman franchise remains one of the flagship intellectual properties for DC Studios and parent company Warner Bros. Discovery. Production teams in London are expected to await further developments regarding the director's availability before resuming camera work.
